Repost From SchNEWS

Up Barricades!

UPDATE: 23/04/12

Quote of the day – “Well who thought it was a good idea to organise these two demonstrations on the same day? Surely it was obvious there would be problems” – random Brighton theatre-goer/by-stander

Yesterday’s counter-protest against the March for England exceeded all expectations. Although the fascists did march they did so inside a mobile police kettle continuously surrounded and occasionally bombarded by counter-protestors. Their march route was cut short and for once the chant “Police protect the fascists” was 100% accurate.

Last year the police successfully kettled most of the anti-fascists, allowing the MfE free rein through the city. They took full advantage of the opportunity to hand out racist abuse and attack alternative looking types. Brighton anti-fascists were determined to avoid a repeat.

Aware that the cops plan was to push the march straight down the road from the railway station to the sea front, the anti-crowd was encouraged to spread themselves thinly along the route. This prevented a pre-emptive kettle.

The MfE were due to start their procession at midday, but due to the geography of the area no-one in the counter-demo had a direct view of their meet-up point at the station. A strange High-Noon quiet settled over the town centre as the counter-protest shuffled and waited, watching police movements for a clue as to what might happen. Numbers gradually built up, serenaded by the bizarrely soothing tones of dub from a punk- soundsytem.

For a while it looked as if the cops were going to throw the towel in and refuse to allow the MfE out of the station. At half-twelve jogging lines of cops and the arrival of horses let everyone know that the fash were on the move.

One eyewitness at the station told SchNEWS “From where they were mustered, they could only see a tiny part of the counter-demo, mainly the UAF contingent. They were very cocky. As soon as they turned the corner and saw the opposition their faces fell”. By this point there were around 500 anti-fascists on the streets.

The nationalists had only mustered around 100, a third of what they had predicted. Yesterday SchNEWS reported that “there was little if any English Defence League insignia actually on display”. Since then we’ve been told that EDL banners and an Essex Infidels flag were unfurled at the station. In reality this was a moot point as the main body of march consisted of known EDL faces, including virtually all of Brighton and Portsmouth EDL with the addition of various unsavoury characters such as Jeff Marsh of Casuals United. Despite the presence of a few token women and kids the march was overwhelmingly male, bald and fat.

It didn’t take long after the march set off before the first few antis were in the road behind a banner. From then on the march became a rugby scrum as the cops used horses, truncheons and pepper spray to force the MfE through. Every time the cops broke through an anti-fascist line, another would form ten or twenty metres down the road.

BATTLE OF CHURCH ST

The pressure only intensified as the police decided to abandon the planned high-profile route and try to smuggle the nationalists down the back-streets. Anti-fascists got ahead of the game and running around the side got in front of the march on Church St to build barricades. Fascists and police came under attack with bottles. It was at this point that some-one set a bin on fire, irritating everyone, right and left, with the acrid smoke.

What was totally remarkable was the level of solidarity for the counter-demo by folk from all walks of life in Brighton. There was no support for the MfE. Pensioners and kids shouted abuse at the fash. The UAF stood shoulder to shoulder with Antifa punks.

Eventually the MfE, numbering around a hundred ended up in their pre-prepared pen, – unfortunately for them so did almost the entire counter-demo. They then had to put up with two hours of being jeered at by the surrounding mob before cops rushed them back to the station to be dispersed. Their march was dogged every step of the way but as they were leaving the crowd was happy to let the cops rush them along. Anti fascists went on to enjoy a pint in the sunshine.

MARLBOROUGH LIGHT-WEIGHTS

Despite the usual online japery the few EDL who tried to make a stand outside the cordon were quickly seen off. Joel Titus, self proclaimed leader of the EDLs youth wing was spotted skulking with a crew of half-wits in the Marlborough pub, one of the few bars that would serve them on the day. A handful of anti-fascists were able to send them packing. Virtually no other pubs would serve the MfE and they failed to maintain a presence in town after they were dispersed.

Is this the end of the March for England in Brighton? Watch this space!

Final word to Brighton Anti-fascists “Brighton showed the racists today that their brand of hatred isn’t welcome in our city. Brighton has always historically seen off the fascists, in the the thirties , the seventies and now today. Big thanks to all who turned out! – Up the punks!”

Repost – Antifascist Action In Liverpool

21 04 2012

Below is a re-post from LIBCOM 19/04/12. There are also articles about it on Liverpool Antifascists and on Truth Liberty & Reason.

“Today has been a bad day for UK fascism. There have been several arrests in dawn raids by anti-terror police following a tip off. They were then run off the streets by anti-fascists in Liverpool.

Today should have seen a debate at Liverpool University featuring all twelve prospective candidates. Amongst them was to be a BNPcandidate, an NF candidate, and on from the English Democrats.

As soon as it was announced that the fascists were to be given a slot at the debate, a demonstration was called by Liverpool Anti-Fascists. The event was cancelled with two days’ notice. There have been several reasons suggested as to why but it would seem that the University has bowed to pressure from students, and the added concerns of security and safety.

Despite there being no debate, we decided to still have a rally at the university. Numbers had understandably not what they would have been had the debate actually taken place but we numbered around forty.

Soon after the first speaker had started we received word that a group of around twenty boneheads had left a pub in the city centre, and were heading up to find us.

We decided to walk towards them and meet them half way. We didn’t have to look too hard to find them. Around thirty fascists came towards us, signalling their intent by aggressively throwing a plastic bottle of strawberry milkshake in our direction. Blows were exchanged between four of five people before the police came around the corner. We stood our ground as several fascists sprinted down a side street, whilst the others quickly made their way back across the road.
Within minutes there was thirty or forty police between us and the fascists. Following a quick discussion we decided to cross over and confront the fascists. Not as confident as they were initially they just stood still and allowed the police to push us back.

Over the next thirty minutes we managed to push the fascists back towards the town centre. Every time we moved, they move back. They were more than happy to stand behind the police, call people ‘faggots’, ‘paedo’s’, ‘IRA’, etc. They even accused of being anti-working class, ironic considering that they are all NF street thugs acting on the orders of a millionaire local businessman.

One comrade was arrested for a public order offence after he attempted to break the police lines and get at the Nazi’s. The confrontation ended as the fascists were escorted back into the city centre by the police. A small group of antifascists then made their way to the local police station to show some support for the arrested comrade.

As always seems to be the case recently, most of the fascists had come from outside the North West. Several of them were boneheads from the Yorkshire area, involved with the National Front, and the British Peoples Party. One of the fascists who exchanged blows with anti-fascists was the BNP candidate from Birkenhead, Joe Killen.

It has been a bad day for the bone heads of the Infidels of Britain, NF. Firstly, several of them had been arrested by anti-terror police in dawn raids, and then their rag tag bunch of goons was embarrassed on the streets of Liverpool.

No Pasaran!”

So Looks like the toothless boneheads ain’t had a good time of it up in the North, Tomorrow it’s the South coasts turn to keep the streets  clean of the ‘new’ fascism. Check out the Brighton Anti-Fascists  blog for more info and also Stop MFE!

EDL going to Brighton this Sunday

20 04 2012

Straight from the horses arse! EDL dictator Tommy Robinson has stated this morning on Sussex Radio that the EDL groups will be travelling to Brighton for the March For England demo on Sunday, Lets get the word out! – can the organisers at MFE still claim this is family day out?? Probably not.

Ultra Right MFE Off Our Streets!

17 04 2012

Below is ripped from the stop MFE page, have a look and get involved!  For anyone who has not been to meet the fascists before, this would be a good starting point – the fascists will be out of their depth in what must be one of Englands most liberal towns!:

At 11.30am on Sunday 22nd April March for England, the English Defence League, Casuals United and other far right groups will gather at Brighton Station with the intention to march through our town. Far from being an innocent celebration of traditional culture this event will be used as a cover to bring their hate filled politics into the centre of Brighton.

We have called for those who want to put forward an alternative view to line Queens Rd, from the station to the clock tower, from 11am. Together we will drown out their message of hate.

Stop MFE! Please note new start time, get there around 11am innit!

DEDICATED FOLLOWERS OF FASCISM

AS EDL VISIT BRUM BUT FAIL TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE KINKS IN THEIR STRATEGY

On Saturday 29th October 2011 the English Defence League (EDL) paid their third visit to Birmingham. Previous excursions ended in running battles through the streets (see SchNEWS 687) The march was the EDL’s second big mobilisation this year, although not hyped as much as their September outing in Tower Hamlets (see SchNEWS 787).

In the end the EDL’s numbers were relatively low – around the 300-400 mark, in contrast to a turnout of 3000 in Luton in Februay (SchNEWS 758) and around 850 in Tower Hamlets earlier this year. This could be the EDL on a downward slide.

EDL facebookers are moaning that the demo format (i.e. turn up in a randomly chosen town, stand around in a car park listening to coked-up egotists chuntering on about Sharia Law before the cops push you back onto your bus) is getting stale and numbers in attendance are dwindling.

SchNEWS travelled up with some mates from the anti-fascist network and watched the first half hour of the EDL demo before cops forcibly cleared away onlookers.

The fash met up in Wetherspoons, Walkabout and O’Neill’s on Birmingham’s Broad Street and marched a hundred yards down the road to Centenary Square where the police had set up a pen for them complete with portaloos and a tinny sound system. George Crosses and a Union Jack were displayed alongside an Israeli and American flag.  One banner, confusingly, read: “Gary Glitter would love Sharia Law, but the kids don’t”.

The stage was set for the EDL leadership to say their piece. The first speaker (who’s name we didn’t catch) hit a bum-note by resigning on the spot. A passer-by began sieg-heiling the EDL which caused a crowd surge with around twenty EDL clashing with police in riot gear. Beer cans, fireworks and a rock were thrown. However, this attempt to break out of the cordon was unsuccessful.

The break-away group was then berated from the podium and told that this was exactly what “the Islamists wanted”. At this point the EDL started fighting each other. Nice one lads!

All in all, the EDL’s Birmingham outing was a fairly desultory effort, compared to previous efforts some Leaguers were able to break out of police cordons and go on the rampage. This may be down to the leadership losing their bottle in the face of  continual prosecutions of organisers in cases of public disorder. In a way the EDL has the worst of both worlds as it lacks a formal organisation but is clearly controlled by a small cabal responsible for its public face, media strategy and liaison with the police. With that cabal effectively bailed away from demos (Stephen Lennon / Tommy Robinson’s stint in Bedford gaol has served as a warning) the EDL is slightly rudderless with the hooligan hardcore being told off from the podium for being overenthusiastic but nobody else wanting to join in ‘cos of all the drunken aggro.

However, the fact this was not a good day for the EDL should not be a cause for complacency. The fact remains that hundreds of racists were able to gather, virtually unopposed in Britain’s second largest city, close to majority Asian and Muslim areas in a way that has not been seen for a generation.

The opposition, such as it was, came from a coalition of Unite Against Fascism and local groups who organised a ‘Unity’ event in Chamberlain Sq few hundred metres from Centenary Square. The crowd numbered no more than 200-300 throughout the day. Local Conservative and Labour politicians took to the podium alongside ‘community leaders’. The only break from this dreary monotony came when Martin Smith from Love Music Hate Racism took the stage and announced that he “didn’t feel like playing music today”, expressed his anger at the poor turnout and asked why we couldn’t listen to some real anti-fascists. A few brave souls ventured towards the EDL lines but were firmly dealt with by the overwhelming police presence.

The cops were in fact in control the whole day forming lines around both the EDL rally and the counter demo, having that morning put fencing around the Occupy Birmingham site preventing entry. Filter cordons were set up  throughout the city centre and those attending the counter demo were searched under Section 60 of the Public Order Act. Everything was heavily stewarded.

At around 3pm a breakout was attempted from the Unity rally. Around a hundred youth marched toward a gap in police lines, only to be held back by Unity stewards. Unwillingness to shove the stewards out of the way gave the police time to form lines. At 4pm, after the EDL coaches had begun to leave, another breakout was tried, this time successful, but was unable to confront the EDL.

Across the country cops have put into place a blueprint to deal with EDL demos. Local councils demand that  fascist and anti-fascist demonstrations are both restricted, the area is swamped with police who use Forward Intelligence Teams to target known anti-fascists and EDL leaders and to ensure both sides are controlled by stewards. In the case of the antis  police procure stewards from local mosques or Muslim organisations.

The result, at the moment, is a stalemate which often allows the EDL to demonstrate unopposed in city centres around the UK.

The fact that elements within the EDL are becoming frustrated with these set piece demonstrations  sets new challenges for anti-fascism in the UK. The EDL and its fellow travellers have on the streets and online begun to turn their anger on the left. They’ve made noises in this direction promising a ‘ring of steel’ around the royal wedding for instance and condemning protesters against student fees.   UAF meetings and stalls have been attacked and last Saturday night a group attacked the Occupy Newcastle site. A fair bit of the bluster from Casuals United and their ilk is just that – prominent threats were made against an anti-fascist benefit in Dalston last week but nothing came of it. However there is a willingness to have a pop at soft targets, small meetings and street stalls.

As the austerity measures bite and the EDL’s anti-Islam rhetoric loses its bite there will be an attempt to re-orientate the Leaguers towards attacks on organised working class resistance. Anti-fascism will have to become part of every activist’s arsenal.

News about anti-fascism

13 10 2011

An Anti-Fascist Network is being built by independent and grassroots groups
seeking to working together against the rise of fascism in our communities.

Over the last year alone, the English Defence League (EDL) have held as
many as 20 marches or static protests and attempted to disrupt anti-racist
meetings andbenefit gigs. Anti-fascists have opposed the EDL wherever they
go and continue to shut down BNP meetings, but we should be more
effective. The aim of the Anti-Fascist Network is to support local
actions, ensuring that anti-fascists are never outnumbered, join together
to counter regional and national EDL events, share resources and provide
legal support.

The Anti-Fascist Network is not about telling people how to campaign in
their areas, what type of anti-fascist activity they should undertake or
what political analysis they should adopt. We simply want to cooperate to
defeat fascism and organised racism.

The Anti-Fascist Network is non-hierarchical, will never work with the
police and is not affiliated to any political party.

Brighton Anti-Fascists, Portsmouth Anarchists, Plymouth Antifa, Welsh
Antifa ask you to join us and become part of the Anti-Fascist Network.
