Game, set and match? The EDL, Walthamstow and Westminster

30 10 2012

By (and re-posted from) 3cafa

It’s been a terrible few weeks for the English Defence League and this weekend appeared to be the icing on their shitecake. After the successful blockade and buggering of the racist rag-tag bunch when they attempted to march through Walthamstow in September, the discredited leadership decided upon a ‘rematch’ to settle the score. From the very beginning this was doomed to failure, with Tommy Robinson getting nicked along with 52 others on Saturday 20th, whilst allegedly on route to an east London mosque in the back of a removals van.

A few days before the ‘rematch’, a ban was put in place prohibiting all marches in four London boroughs for 30 days – in anticipation of ‘serious public disorder’ if the EDL march went ahead.*

Despite the promises to EDL supporters that they would no longer liaise with the police, the remaining ‘leaders’ agreed to a static demonstration outside Parliament instead.

EDL threatening to turn up in numbers in Walthamstow. On the ground they were a no show.

Here’s a report from a local anti-fascist on events in London on Saturday 27th October:

“We joined up with others from a near-by group early in the morning and set about a spotting mission to see what we could see.

“After making the journey up to Walthamstow and having a mooch about it was obvious that the EDL weren’t calling anybodies bluff and definitely hadn’t made an appearance (despite what they were saying in the run up). The Unite Against Fascism/We Are Waltham Forest demonstration was just starting to gather. It attracted over 200 people and defied the march ban put in place days before.

‘We Are Waltham Forest’ protest in Walthamstow

“Heading back down to central London and checking in at a few of their favourite drinking holes, there wasn’t even a whisper. A small group was seen entering the tube tailed by a group of police twice their number. At the same time reports were filtering through that only 50 EDL supporters had gathered in a pen at Westminster, heavily outnumbered by journalists and police. Around 25 anti-fascists made an attempt to get to them, but their advance was stopped by the large numbers of police present. One EDLer was nicked during the scuffle.

EDL’s ‘national’ demonstration at Westminster

“Half expecting some of the rowdier (and more stupid) elements to head east to either have a pop at the East London Mosque or the London Anarchist Bookfair being held in Mile End, we headed that way. Nothing to report, apart from thousands of people having a jolly time at another very successful bookfair.”

The picture is plain for everybody to see; the EDL only managed to muster between 50-80 people (total) to a ‘national’ demonstration, one that had been billed as ‘the come back’ at that. This is in comparison to the estimated 100,000 who marched against cuts in London the weekend previously, and the thousands who attended the London Anarchist Bookfair on the same day.

The EDL are nosediving into insignificance, something that even the remaining die-hards are fast realising. It’s at times like these when anti-fascists need to make a concerted effort to drive them into the ground- for good! Previously far-right groups have faced dwindling opposition as they’ve gotten smaller and smaller, allowing them to re-organise and re-emerge later on.

Whilst Saturday proved to be another major set back for the EDL and their divisive and reactionary ’cause’, anti-fascists could have had a much bigger impact. If 1/10 of the people attending the Anarchist Bookfair had chosen to get out on the streets, the day would have ended very differently for the EDL. Lets not give them room to breath. See you on the streets!

Westminster - not very many FascistsWestminster – another far-right flop

Here are a few other reports from the day: 123

*For the record – we do not believe in banning marches nor do we believe that the state can be used to oppose fascism. The ban equally covers possible marches by anti-fascists, trade unionists or any others wishing to protest or get a message across. Opposition to racist or far-right groups can only come about through a truly democratic and grassroots position. To rely on state repression is to undermine the principles of self-organisation and direct democracy that we believe in, and to put our  faith in an institution far more destructive and divisive to the working-class than the fascists currently are.

Walthamstow Call Out Part Deux

21 10 2012

After their miserable day out in Walthamstow a few weeks back, the EDL have promised to return for another demonstration, this coming Saturday, the  27th October – this time without co-operating with the police.  At the last demo they managed to get a measly 300 people out compared to the thousands of locals and anti-fascists that opposed them. Fuck only knows how they think they are going to fare without police protection.

To add to the racists problems 53 of them, including the leaders, got nicked on Saturday as they tried to plan an attack on a London Mosque by all hiding in the back of a removal van!! Those who got nicked are not allowed back into east London as part of their bail…there’s a report from EDL News: Here

If this unpoliced revenge ‘demo’ is anything like when Casuals United tried the same thing in Brighton, it will end up with the fascists skulking around a few pubs, desperately trying to get pissed enough to get the bollocks to go and shout at locals who don’t look white. As easy as it is to laugh at these inept morons, even a handful of drunk racists can inflict injury & damage  on an innocent community. Anti-fascists from AFN were out last time and will be out again, as long as the community is under threat from street fascism.

Fascists Attack – We Fight Back! – Sunderland 6/10/12

9 10 2012
This article is a re-post from:  North East Anarchists
Anti-fascist march Sunderland 6-10-12Saturday 6th Oct saw about 70/75 anti-fascists gather at the Murray Library on Chester Road in Sunderland for a counter demonstration against the combined fascist threat of the the Infidels and the Northern Patriotic Front (fomerly the north-east branch of the National Front). Besides the usual mixture of anarchists, leftists and liberals, there was a large and lively group of around 20/30 local Asian youth, many of whom were masked up, making for a militant atmosphere on the march, which the UAF contingent repeatedly tried to dampen by stopping the march, demanding it slow down and constantly trying to herd the youths back behind the banners.

The march itself was short – straight up Chester Road before turning off to St Mark’s Road. We had heard from a comrade that the fascists were drinking in The Chesters pub, further up the road. Clearly buzzing on the experience of being part of a mass march, causing gridlock on one of Sunderland’s main arterial roads, the Asian kids went straight past St Mark’s Road, aiming for the pub where the fascists were drinking. However, a combination of the police and UAF ‘leadership’ turned the march to its original destination on St Mark’s Road.

Once on St Mark’s Road, police EG squads appeared. We reached the end of the march at the Hylton Road end at about 12:40. The anti-fascists occupied a defensive position, protecting the target of the fascists – the site of a proposed mosque. Here, one of the UAF lot made a daft speech claiming victory twenty minutes before the fascists were even due to turn up. The first fascists appeared about 1pm – about 20 of the NPF. Barred from bringing any of their usual NF banners and flags by the Infidels (they had said it would give the wrong impression!) and evidently unhappy with the numbers of anti-fascists, the NPF contingent were subdued – not their usual rabid selves. Outnumbering the NPF several times over, the anti-fascists were vocal.

Then the EDL/SDL/Infidels turned up, about 100, and a real confrontation took place. Elderly anti-fascists who attended put the experienced and younger left/anarchist people who did not turn out to shame.

The newly-arrived fascists immediately started to throw bangers – some 20-25 of them in total – beer bottles, sticks and stones at the anti-fascists, who held their ground, giving slogans and verbals back in spades. Several anti-fascists were hit by missiles thrown by the EDL, but no serious injuries were suffered by our side. The immediate result of the fascist barrage was that several Asian youths broke through the police line in an attempt to get at the fascists. Far from being intimidated, the local youths became more militant and determined to fight back against the stupid fascist aggression, with large numbers charging off to meet the fascists as they attempted to get around behind the police lines through the back streets.

The far-right only had bizarre and fantasy slogans such as “No Mosque at Ground Zero” – who knew that Sunderland could be mistaken for New York? “Deport Pakistani paedophiles”, but we do not know of any in Sunderland, and the usual tedious accusations that the anti-fascists were “all paedophiles”, which is also plainly rubbish. The fascists were not locals, as there was a Blackburn EDL banner and seemingly all of their placards were SDL ones. If that is the best their Northern divisions can do, it’s embarrassing for them. Their rank and file are being used for nothing, the fascist leadership stood toward the back and let their young ones have a go. But, to what end? They had 13 arrests – 10% of their turn-out – and more are sure to follow, and yet they gained nothing. They cannot keep this up or there will be nothing left as they recruited none and alienated many.

The police took a couple of bottles at the back of their heads, bangers at their feet, but their bosses did not order a move against the criminals responsible. The police intelligence was poor and they were slow to protect their own officers, they failed to address the public order offences committed throughout the demonstration.

The brave anti-fascists stood their ground and eventually, after much aggro, the fascists retreated and we waived “Bye Bye” at them. Next time we will have more numbers, and they will not pass again.

March politics

Before the march liberals said that the anti fascist mobilisation will ‘be peaceful’ but this only attempts to tie the movement’s hands. Also, turning the march away from where the fascists are was just controlling the march so they could proclaim a ‘victory’ which was nothing of the sort. When faced with organised fascist violence it is essential to defend ourselves. The fascists were not interested in democratic debate or a real discussion.

Liberals are deluded if they think we should “turn the other cheek”. WE SAY BOLLOCKS. Fascists attack – WE FIGHT BACK. The local Asian youths did themselves – and our city – proud with a great display of militancy and courage. That is exactly what the anti-fascist movement needs if we are to move beyond merely symbolic victories to actually sweeping the fascist scum off our streets. The UAF control of the march was a problem and the UAF proclaiming a victory on the megaphone against the fascists before the EDL/SDL had arrived was and is fantasy, if anything it was around a score draw taking everything into consideration.

The truth is that the UAF mobilisation was pitiful, it was the anarchists and the Asian youth who supplied the militancy and numbers. Anybody with a political brain will review the day and realise that the UAF attempts leadership are a dead end. For the fascists, it was a bizarre booze fuelled outing which many will suffer for, and got them nothing. They did not pass.

The new Integralist Conservatism: a briefing

24 09 2012

The following article has been ripped from Libcom.org

The new Integralist Conservatism: a briefing

Jon Gaynor provides an introduction to the right-wing current of thought which encompasses groups like the EDL, anti-Muslim bloggers and authors, and populist political parties.

The brutal massacre perpetrated by the Norwegian right winger Anders Behring Breivik has been met with shock and puzzlement, not least amongst pundits struggling to come to terms with a terrorism not committed by Muslims, but by a vehemently anti-Muslim rightwinger.

It is not enough to dismiss Breivik as a ‘madman’, or a ‘nut’. His was a carefully planned, reasoned and executed strike. Moreover, it was a thoroughly political act, politically motivated and with political content. Breivik’s rationale was not born in a vacuum, nor was it a post-hoc rationalisation of his actions. It is telling that psychological explanations are reserved for white terrorists, wheras the rhetoric of jihadis is taken at face value.

EDL Leadership Turns Suicidal

10 09 2012

Re-post From Wessex Solidarity….

‘Beer leader’ Stephen Yaxley-Lennon has called on his squabbling minions to set aside their differences and return to Walthamstow on the 27 October – yes, the same day as the London Anarchist Bookfair!

It remains to be seen how many of the dejected looking eddles we watched being poured onto trains at Blackhorse road will want to return to East London with 3000 plus anarchists and antifa just 10 minutes up the road, but we anticipate a repeat of the Brighton ‘casuals’ fiasco. 30-40 fascists will skulk around trying to get heavily refreshed without drawing attention to themselves – this they will spectacularly fail to do.

Last time they declined to liase with the police some of them never made it out of the hotel, but it was only 3 o’clock in the afternoon so maybe they were having a lie in.

From what we’ve seen Walthamstow residents are more than capable of taking care of themselves, but feel free to give us a bell if you want a hand, it’s what we’re here for.

Anarchists – always happy to help!

Walthamstow: death knell for the EDL?

6 09 2012

Brighton hinted at it, Bristol seemed to continue the pattern but today’s misguided outing to the London borough of Walthamstow showed the extent to which the English Defence League is now in a steep downward spiral.

This was intended to be a re-run of Tower Hamlets – a mission into darkest Muslamic country to liberate a corner of England. In the event around only two hundred fash made the trip down – to be confronted by a multi-racial crowd of over two thousand.

After getting pissed up and fighting amongst themselves at King’s Cross station the EDL gathered at Blackhorse Rd tube station. They were then marched in a mobile kettle along Forest Rd, the initial stage of their intended route to the Town Hall. The UAF were behind police lines occupying half of Forest Rd. Autonomous anti-fascists waited just down from the crossroads. The EDL approached at a snail’s pace entirely surrounded by cops.

As soon as the hapless leaguers came in sight the Anti-Fascist Network‘s banner was unveiled – triggering scuffles with the police and a couple of arrests. The cops soon realised that if a handful of anti-fascists were going to cause that much bother then getting the EDL past the UAF demo was going to be more trouble than it was it worth. The answer was to divert the EDL down the side-streets and try to smuggle them to their rally point.

SMASH GAZEBO

Meanwhile, realising that the EDL march had been blocked anti-fascists started breaking away in small groups getting round police lines to the rally point. Soon hundreds had gathered in front of a gazebo decorated with England flags and staffed by the EDL’s top boys. Unfortunately for them their minions were being held up by police a few streets away leaving Tommy Robinson and Kev Carroll to have a rally/garden party behind police lines that barely got into double figures. After they were bombarded with eggs and bottle and repeated anti-fascist crowd surges the EDL’s police liaison officers told them to leave the area. Rumours that Kev and Tommy later indulged in a bit of sulky mutual recrimination and even handbags at dawn have so far been confined to the socialist press.

Eventually the EDL were marched back, remarkably silent for this once vocal organisation. Locals came out to give them some abuse to send them on their way. One anti-fascist told SchNEWS “They recruited no-one, didn’t seem to have a point to their demo and basically looked like thuggish idiots. They’re not even frightening anymore”.

STOP THE BNP DEMO IN GLASGOW – 28TH JULY 2012

20 07 2012

On Saturday 28 July, the BNP will descend on Glasgow city centre for what leader Nick Griffin is calling the “biggest nationalist demonstration ever in Glasgow”. It follows their failed attempts – alongside their fascist chums in the Scottish Defence League – to carry out activity on Buchanan Street over two Saturdays in July so far. On both occasions, passers by and local anti-fascists have united to show their opposition to the BNP and SDL – and they were soon sent packing. Saturday 28th must be a huge show of force against the fascists – they shall not pass!

FASH, BANG, WALLOP

23 04 2012

Repost From SchNEWS

Up Barricades!

UPDATE: 23/04/12

Quote of the day – “Well who thought it was a good idea to organise these two demonstrations on the same day? Surely it was obvious there would be problems” – random Brighton theatre-goer/by-stander

Yesterday’s counter-protest against the March for England exceeded all expectations. Although the fascists did march they did so inside a mobile police kettle continuously surrounded and occasionally bombarded by counter-protestors. Their march route was cut short and for once the chant “Police protect the fascists” was 100% accurate.

Last year the police successfully kettled most of the anti-fascists, allowing the MfE free rein through the city. They took full advantage of the opportunity to hand out racist abuse and attack alternative looking types. Brighton anti-fascists were determined to avoid a repeat.

Aware that the cops plan was to push the march straight down the road from the railway station to the sea front, the anti-crowd was encouraged to spread themselves thinly along the route. This prevented a pre-emptive kettle.

The MfE were due to start their procession at midday, but due to the geography of the area no-one in the counter-demo had a direct view of their meet-up point at the station. A strange High-Noon quiet settled over the town centre as the counter-protest shuffled and waited, watching police movements for a clue as to what might happen. Numbers gradually built up, serenaded by the bizarrely soothing tones of dub from a punk- soundsytem.

For a while it looked as if the cops were going to throw the towel in and refuse to allow the MfE out of the station. At half-twelve jogging lines of cops and the arrival of horses let everyone know that the fash were on the move.

One eyewitness at the station told SchNEWS “From where they were mustered, they could only see a tiny part of the counter-demo, mainly the UAF contingent. They were very cocky. As soon as they turned the corner and saw the opposition their faces fell”. By this point there were around 500 anti-fascists on the streets.

The nationalists had only mustered around 100, a third of what they had predicted. Yesterday SchNEWS reported that “there was little if any English Defence League insignia actually on display”. Since then we’ve been told that EDL banners and an Essex Infidels flag were unfurled at the station. In reality this was a moot point as the main body of march consisted of known EDL faces, including virtually all of Brighton and Portsmouth EDL with the addition of various unsavoury characters such as Jeff Marsh of Casuals United. Despite the presence of a few token women and kids the march was overwhelmingly male, bald and fat.

It didn’t take long after the march set off before the first few antis were in the road behind a banner. From then on the march became a rugby scrum as the cops used horses, truncheons and pepper spray to force the MfE through. Every time the cops broke through an anti-fascist line, another would form ten or twenty metres down the road.

BATTLE OF CHURCH ST

The pressure only intensified as the police decided to abandon the planned high-profile route and try to smuggle the nationalists down the back-streets. Anti-fascists got ahead of the game and running around the side got in front of the march on Church St to build barricades. Fascists and police came under attack with bottles. It was at this point that some-one set a bin on fire, irritating everyone, right and left, with the acrid smoke.

What was totally remarkable was the level of solidarity for the counter-demo by folk from all walks of life in Brighton. There was no support for the MfE. Pensioners and kids shouted abuse at the fash. The UAF stood shoulder to shoulder with Antifa punks.

Eventually the MfE, numbering around a hundred ended up in their pre-prepared pen, – unfortunately for them so did almost the entire counter-demo. They then had to put up with two hours of being jeered at by the surrounding mob before cops rushed them back to the station to be dispersed. Their march was dogged every step of the way but as they were leaving the crowd was happy to let the cops rush them along. Anti fascists went on to enjoy a pint in the sunshine.

MARLBOROUGH LIGHT-WEIGHTS

Despite the usual online japery the few EDL who tried to make a stand outside the cordon were quickly seen off. Joel Titus, self proclaimed leader of the EDLs youth wing was spotted skulking with a crew of half-wits in the Marlborough pub, one of the few bars that would serve them on the day. A handful of anti-fascists were able to send them packing. Virtually no other pubs would serve the MfE and they failed to maintain a presence in town after they were dispersed.

Is this the end of the March for England in Brighton? Watch this space!

Final word to Brighton Anti-fascists “Brighton showed the racists today that their brand of hatred isn’t welcome in our city. Brighton has always historically seen off the fascists, in the the thirties , the seventies and now today. Big thanks to all who turned out! – Up the punks!”

Ultra Right MFE Off Our Streets!

17 04 2012

Below is ripped from the stop MFE page, have a look and get involved!  For anyone who has not been to meet the fascists before, this would be a good starting point – the fascists will be out of their depth in what must be one of Englands most liberal towns!:

At 11.30am on Sunday 22nd April March for England, the English Defence League, Casuals United and other far right groups will gather at Brighton Station with the intention to march through our town. Far from being an innocent celebration of traditional culture this event will be used as a cover to bring their hate filled politics into the centre of Brighton.

We have called for those who want to put forward an alternative view to line Queens Rd, from the station to the clock tower, from 11am. Together we will drown out their message of hate.

Stop MFE! Please note new start time, get there around 11am innit!
