Fascists Hate Freedom???

3 02 2013

It’s been widely reported over the last day or so that Freedom Press was subject to a ‘firebomb attack’. What seems to have happened is that some scumbag managed to force open one of the outside window covers with a crowbar or some-such and lob in a Molotov cocktail or pour petrol in and set it alight. Whatever they did the effort was amateurish and the shop survives to agitate another day, thank fuck no one was hurt, and a lot of the damage apparently came from the chemicals used to extinguish the fire, what is apparently normal in these situations. It looks like the fascist scum that creep around hiding their beliefs from everyone they know & try to care about are to blame, but once again the actions of a couple of pricks looks likely to give a shot in the arm to anti-fascists, and those on the left who have sat on the fence for too long. As the antifash movement grew following the surprise attack by fascists on an Irish march in Liverpool a year or so ago, more people again seem to be joining the movement to stamp out UK fascism.

Freedom was last attacked in 1993 by Combat 18, during that attack they sprayed C18 on the wall as they left, but in the age where every fascist posts their poisonous ideas on the net it is unlikely that any of the fuckers will admit to this one. The pigs as well as antifascists know who a lot of these people are. (The police are involved as they were called by the fire brigade, although we shouldn’t expect anything from that line of inquiry).

After the Tower Hamlets EDL march was scuppered last year, and the embarrassment they suffered in Walthamstow (twice) recently, there was chatter on EDL facebook pages about attacking the anarchist book fair, with some of them posting links to Freedom Press. Another candidate could be the ‘British Golden Dawn’ who got humiliated the other weekend by London antifascists, and as they are a tiny group of nutters this could be the kind of cowardly stuff they could sink right into. We may never know if it was organised or just a lone dickhead, needless to say whoever it was probably identifies with most far right wannabe street movements. The Kebele Club in Bristol also had it windows put in a couple of days before, although the prime suspects for that locally seems to be the toff lads from the local hunt. It’s also worth noting that the Neo-Nazi group Blood and Honour hosted a secret gig in London last week, although there does not seem to have been any talk about it from them so far.

Help has already been offered by many people, today saw a great turn out by folk volunteering to help clean up so the shop can get back to running as normal asap. Other anarchists and antifascists have quickly organised events to raise money for Freedom with events planned from Newcastle to Brighton (and everywhere in between).

Iron Column Records is looking for artists to donate to a benefit CD for Freedom – here’s the link: Iron Column

Poets can get involved here – Poems

And anyone wanting to make a donation can do so by ordering a book on line but stating that the money is for a donation: Freedom Press

Freedoms online books are still available as normal as obviously not all stock is stored in the shop and the upstaris area is fine apart from electrical damage.

Here’s the amazing story of the clean up so far: Clean me!

So it looks like a near tragedy could turn into a positive for the antifascist and anarchist movements, and no doubt whoever did it may curse the day they kicked the hornets nest. Solidarity With Freedom Press, Always Antifascist.

Another London Group Joins!!

31 01 2013

Anti-Fascist Network is pleased to welcome the latest group to align! Without further ado I present to you London Anti-fascists. Click on the name for their blog – and if you wanna get your theory on see this article they wrote about Militant anti-fascism. We hope they can continue to build on the success of the mobilisation outside the Greek embassy along with our existing friends in the big smoke, ALARM!

To celebrate this momentous occasion here’s an upside down picture of Mussolini messing about… upside down!

English Volunteer Farce

28 01 2013

As a few articles have already been written about the English Volunteer Force and their shamble’s of a first demo there’s not a lot to add, other than it turned out to be what most people expected – piss poor! A maximum of 50 nationalist extremists from all around the country securely kettled for their own safety. A UAF demonstration of similar numbers kept itself to itself some distance away.

Here’s some good reports from the day: Birmingham News, EMAF, EDL News

Athens Calls Answered!!!!

21 01 2013

afngreek

Saturday saw anti fascists across the world answer the call from Greece Antifa for a show of solidarity. So far reports of solidarity demo’s happening have been received in Greece from London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Bristol, Cork, Dublin, Derry, Barcelona, Ossona, Manresa, La Garriga, Bilbao, Lyon, Brussells, Berlin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Tampere, Warsaw, Vilneous, Moscow, Chicago, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Sydney, Canberra, Buenos Aires, Oslo, Cologne, Nicosia, and Paris.

All in all a good day for anti fascism, especially in London where around 200-300 gathered in the cold outside the Greek embassy (Sorry to those reporting much higher numbers, but the AFN does not exaggerate or lie, this is a figure that many involved in the network thought was about right).

AFN – Brought to you by demontix.com!

UAF did a good job getting their supporters out, but unfortunately treated them to speakers including Labour MPs  Jeremy Corbyn and David Lammy – like the Labour party doesn’t give immigrants a kick when it wins them votes! London groups aligned with the anti-fascist network seemed pleased with the local antifash turn out, and they were joined by a couple of other groups who made the trip through the snow. One group of Antifascists who arrived fashionably late stumbled upon the ‘British friends of Golden Dawn’ holding pen (holding all 12 of them) and whilst out of the UAF kettle attempted to engage the dipshit fascists in a bit of light banter – shortly after this the Nazi’s were marched off to a tube station by the old bill in a shower of snowballs as the antifascists were put into the appropriate kettle to join the solidarity demo.

Pretty much everything Antifascists do is reactive to what the opposition is doing so it was great to have show of solidarity, requested, and answered by antifascists. The fact the scum only managed to get 12 out to counter the demo is encouraging, as was the turn out from Londoners. To be fair there were apparently a couple of fascists waiting in a pub nearby, but they decided to stay there rather than making arses out of themselves like their mates. The classic quote of the day came from one of the Golden Dawn Supporters – “We’re not fascists, we’re Nazi’s”. Fucking insane!!

The Edinburgh demo was almost identical, with 8 or so assorted fruit loops including SDL members showing up to stand on the sidelines and look dejected.

The SDL did not fare much better in Pollokshields (Glasgow) on Sunday when a planned demonstration to use the anniversary of the death of a Scottish lad to try and stir up some hate attracted about 15 nutters and was told where to go. The turnout may have been low however, that may be due to the deceased being of catholic descent and the SDL getting confused about which side they are on. Militant antifascists and local antifa casuals also stayed away due to the organisers of the counter protest working with the police.

All in all a fucking terrible weekend for the fascists in the UK. If there does seem to be a lull in their fortunes it could provide a perfect opportunity to build a stronger, and more organised movement for the future.

Here’s some more reports from Saturday: Schnews – Wessex Solidarity – Athens Antifa

And one from Sunday in Glasgow: ISG

Greek Embassy, 1A Holland Park, Notting Hill. From 11am Saturday.

15 01 2013

After hearing that antifascists and Greek folks living in the UK will be Holding a solidarity demo outside the Greek Embassy this Saturday (19 Jan) groups such as the EDL and Casuals United have made plans to counter the demo, and will turn up in opposition, to show solidarity with the classically fascist Golden Dawn party of Greece. It seems strange that these creeps have spent the last couple of years whinging that they are not fascists, or Nazi’s, and now they publicly support a European Party that is both.  Time for antifascists of all denominations to unite and shout it from the fucking rooftops, In solidarity with Greece Antifa’s – Against UK Fascist Scum.

*****Update from Greece – Fans of AEK Athens declare war on Golden Dawn after an aid handout was attacked for not discriminating against immigrants*****

Fools Gold (repost from Schnews)

For 25 years Golden Dawn were a marginal group that for the most attacked small left-wing and anarchist groups and sometimes would also go for immigrants. Until a few years ago they never measured more than 200 members. The Greek Government had paved the way for xenophobic sentiment by tolerating smaller, subtler acts of racism against individuals that went unchallenged. It was not until a few years ago that Golden Dawn started emerging as something bigger. Up until recently they had one office. Now? They have forty-eight”. – Greek Anti-fascists

The rapid expansion of Greece’s homegrown neo-nazi movement, the Golden Dawn, should set alarm bells ringing for anti-fascists across Europe. On Saturday 19th January, Athens will see a massive anti-fa demonstration as over 24 organisations spanning the political spectrum assemble. Greek anti-fascists have called for international solidarity and on the same day demonstrations will be held outside Greek embassies across the world. In London supporters can gather outside the Greek embassy, 1A Holland Park, Notting Hill from 12 noon.

Until the last couple of years the Golden Dawn, with their Swastika-lite logo, were a fringe far-right group. One policy (admittedly abandoned in the nineties) was to re-establish the worship of the Hellenic Gods – Zeus, Apollo the whole bit. However our Greek anti-fascist said, referring to Operation Xenos Zeus in August this year during a Greek hospitality crisis, when over 50,000 migrants were detained (see SchNEWS 823):“Events such as these have slowly empowered Golden Dawn. Even in 2010 people would have laughed at the thought of having Golden Dawn in power. Golden Dawn was one of many far-right factions in Greece that would never get near parliament”.

In the last elections (June 2012) Golden Dawn received 7% of the popular vote and gained eighteen seats in parliament. Their strength on the streets hasn’t gone anywhere either and they can draw thousands to rallies.

The Greek political right for the past decade has been a three-headed monster that consisted of Nea Democratia, Greece’s major centre right political party, LAOS, an extreme right party and Golden Dawn.

The roots of the organisation go back to 1980 when Nikolaos Michalokiakos together with some cronies launched Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) magazine. Michalokiakos had been active in far right politics for many years, serving time in July 1974 and again in December 1976 for assaults on left wingers during demonstrations. While in prison during 1976 Michalokiakos met the leaders of the Greek military junta of 1967-1974 and drafted the foundations of the Golden Dawn party. After his release from prison he joined the army and became a Special Forces commando, but was later dishonourably discharged for his Nazi views.

In the last decade Golden Dawn had become more active against the left but were still a relatively small presence. In 2005 Golden Dawn were still laughable and easily dismissed, holding marches, static demonstrations and distributing homophobic and racist literature.

ANCIENT HISTORY?

Then, of course, came the economic crisis and the collapse of the Greek standard of living. The Greek economy is sinking like a stone in a neo-liberal whirlpool. Growth rates, negative at -0.2% in 2008, hit -7.1% in 2011. Unemployment hit a record of 26% in September last year overtaking Spain to become the highest in the eurozone. The country’s got no money: In 2011, the country’s public debt stood at €355.658 billion (170.6% of nominal GDP). All in all, the future’s looking bleak for the Greeks.

The average wage is 800 euros a month, nowhere near enough to meet the cost of living, in fact even a good salary of 2000 euros a month, way above the national average, still results in spending more than you earn. The average salary in Greece shrank 23% in the last year. For years Greeks have being labelled as lazy by international press at a time when there are no jobs in Greece to be lazy at and those employed work for pittance. Mixed with the decline in living standards, Greek national pride has been seriously dented. All the factors together have resulted in a perfect Stormfront.

LET’S PARTY LIKE IT’S 1939

Until recently oppositon to the IMF-imposed austerity measures came from the left but Golden Dawn has vowed to defend the Greek populace “from the dark centres of power” who sought to enslave them. “Resist the selling off of our country” reads their website – the austerity measures are then blamed on immigrants.

Their current home page auto-flicks through five images, each touching on various hot topics. One image is full of AK-47’s, bullets and wads of cash with the headline “Unmeasurable threat for Greece, the Albanian Mafia”. Another image shows a caricature sketch of an emanciated Greek citizen being squeezed through an apple press as coins fall out his pocket and a fat aristocratic figure stands by representing the Troika with the words “With a new, secret agenda the Troika is fixing its own state”.

GD politicians have demonstrated their willingness to crackdown on lefty unionism, true to the spirit of fascism. Independent journalist Yiannis Baboulias writing in Occupied Times relates an incident occuring in the town of Loutraki. Strikers had blocked the road leading up to the local casino as a result of their union dispute with the management. Accompanied by ten bouncers, the new Golden Dawn MP Efstathios Boukouras threatened the strikers, saying, “We won’t allow the communists to do as they please”.

The party has also spread its sticky tenticles into the business sphere – thanks to its links with the Greek elites, the party is able to act as a financial supporter and provider during the time of crisis. Golden Dawn funds have been pulling ailing football clubs out of debt, and actively supported the Bank of Piraeus to acquire Agrotiki (a state-run bank) – it’s suspected of using dubiously acquired state funds to do so. The connection between Golden Dawn and the Bank of Piraeus? Only that Takis Michaloliakos, the bank’s lawyer, happens to be the brother of Golden Dawn supremo Nikos Michaloliakos.

During a session in the Greek Parliament on 7th of November Golden Dawn vetoed a proposed tax increase on earnings from shipping related activities. Shipping in Greece, a maritime nation, is huge business – in fact 20% of global shipping is run by Greek companies. The owners of shipping concerns are in the upper echleons of Greek business circles and are unbelievably lucky when it comes to tax, in fact most of themselves had probably never heard of the word until the 7th.

But despite this pandering to the elite Golden dawn have actively been presenting themselves as the allies of the common man, well the common Greek at least. In a simple and effective move they have set up food kitchens. Their first time was outside the Greek Parliament where the message to the citizens would have been clear about who was looking after them in their time of need. The only prequisite for a meal? A Greek passport.

This is the trick of fascism of course – in a moment of crisis big business turns to the far-right to pacify the workers one way or the other. Desperation and a feeling of helplessness in the large percentage of the Greek population that are not generally active in politics is leading to increased support for Golden Dawn. Its pseudo anti-capitalist stance might not trick a seasoned anarchist but it speaks to the heart of many working class people that have been suffering in the hands of neo-liberalism.

MOBS AND COPPERS

Golden Dawn are also heavily favoured by the Greek police. Polling data revealed that nearly half of the police voted for Golden Dawn in recent elections. Allegations of collaboration between elements of the state and the fascist group stretch back years. On the 9th July 2009 the second mass protest march in a week took to the streets of Athens against State sponsored racism and police collaboration with fascist groups in the area of Agios Panteleimonas. The march was organised by the left and saw over 5,000 protesters demonstrate outside Parliament. On the same day, after meeting with the Minister of Public Order, fascist vigilante groups in Agios Panteleimonas attacked one of the oldest anarchist squats, Villa Amalias.

That day, the Minister of Public Order, Markoyannakis (also known for his involvement in a huge Siemens scandal in Greece and his pro-Nazi views) met with Golden Dawn members. Twenty minutes after the meeting a group from Golden Dawn left the area of Agios Panteleimonas and attacked the squat Villa Amalias with molotov cocktails and other projectiles. The attack was successfully knocked back by the anarchists, leaving the fash running behind their copper mates (who just happened to be there) for protection. This incident clearly indicated how close the links between the state, the police and the fascist group were. This was the first time since the junta that a Minister met with a fascist combat group. Greek media did not report the event.

Villa Amalias was evicted by the Greek police on 20th December 2012. They used the classic pretext of suspected drug dealing to enter and search the premises with a district attorney in tow. A few spliff butts later and the current minister of public order, Dendias, announced that their findings “prove[d] that Villa was an epicentre for lawlessness for 22 years and that the law has finally been restored, thanks to the will of Samaras (PM)”. The raid also uncovered some empty beer bottles that were obviously “materials for the construction of molotovs” and nothing to do with the gig and café space in the squat. Eight people were arrested during the raid and taken to court the next day where they were charged with felonies for the possession of empties, or “material for the construction of explosives” as they are legally known.

ANTI-FASCIST ACTION

Faced with this onslaught Greek anti-fascists have had to pick up the pace. Demonstrations, gigs and ad-hoc attacks are no longer enough.

Anti-fascists have set up and maintained motorbike patrols to guard the streets and people from Nazi thugs. The patrols became necessary due to the level of racist and anti-leftist attacks in the neighbourhoods and provinces of Athens at the hands of fascists and police (not mutually exclusive) that always went unpunished.

Attacks on Golden Dawn offices have become commonplace. Anti-fascists have used fire, stones, molotov cocktails and even dynamite against the fascists’ HQ, although bombings were accompanied by warning phone calls.

Violent confrontations between anti-fascists and fascists happen often on the streets but one thing is for sure: Whenever the police are present, Golden Dawn can rely on back up. Arrested anti-fascists have been subjected to the kind of abuses suffered by dissidents under the military junta.

On the 24th August 2012 anti-fascists and immigrants united to stand up against the tyranny that was unfolding under operation “Xenios Zeus”. Greek and non-Greek citizens stood together to show the minister of public order that were not afraid of the militant sweep and violent mob attacks that they were faced with. Again on the 28th October, teachers, students and anti-fascists stood together on the streets and confronted the Golden Dawn during a national demo. “Neither in the parliament nor anywhere, Nazis out of our neighborhoods” shouted thousands around the country.

We leave the last word to Athens Anti-fa: “We cannot tolerate the rich and the government that sows poverty and deprivation, leads to suicides, sends homeless to queue at soup kitchens putting the blame for the crisis on immigrants, turning them to scapegoats, just like Hitler blamed the Jews for everything. This policy led to Dachau and Auschwitz camps, to gas chambers and the crematories with millions of dead Jews, Roma, Communists and gays. It led to the massacre of WWII and the Nazi brutalities in the occupied countries like Greece.”

Fuck Off Golden Dawn.

7 01 2013

Anyone reading this will already be aware of the situation in Greece with the classic fascist party ‘Golden Dawn’ getting around 10% of the vote, whilst antifascists are being repressed by the police (40% of cops admitted voting for Golden Dawn). There have been instances of militant antifascism with Golden Dawn offices being burnt down and gangs of antifa on motorbikes patrolling Athens in the evenings.

Many watching the far right over here will have seen our fascist friends get inspired by the shit that’s going down in Greece, here’s a screen shot from one of Portsmouth’s stoopider ‘patriots’ Martin Jackson.

Middle Picture Next to an EDL Poster is 'British Friends Of Golden Dawn' (underneath that is a good example of how some of these pricks view women).

Middle Picture Next to an EDL Poster is ‘British Friends Of Golden Dawn’ (underneath that is a good example of how some of these pricks view women).

A BBC reporter who recently infiltrated the Golden Dawn reported about how they make a bit of extra cash in their head office by selling paper copies of Hitlers speeches. There’s no way the EDL & Casuals United scum can claim they are not fascist when displaying pictures like the one above – maybe they are financially coming to terms with what they stand for.

It was mentioned at the Anarchist book fair this year that it is not inconceivable for the UK to slip into the kind of economic shitstorm that has given rise to the fascists in Greece, and this is why it is vitally important that we build antifascist networks and and strong communities now, should the situation here ever get that bad.

Things in Greece could be about to get better, below is a repost from Athens Antifa 19th Jan Blog. People here may want to think about solidarity actions for our Greek counterparts.

The initial Declaration for 19 January

November 30, 2012 by Athensantifa19jan

On the 19th of January 2013, we flood the streets of Athens from every city and neighborhood of the country, workers and youth from every workplace, place of education and art. We occupy the city with music, chants and speeches, to shout that the Nazis are not welcome, that the coalition government’s racist policies of concentration camps, FRONTEX and of the denial of citizenship to the children of immigrants, enrage us as much as the barbaric measures that send hundreds of thousands to unemployment.

We cannot tolerate the rich and the government that sows poverty and deprivation, leads to suicides, sends homeless to queue at soup kitchens putting the blame for the crisis on immigrants, turning them to scapegoats, just like Hitler blamed the Jews for everything. This policy led to Dachau and Auschwitz camps, to gas chambers and the crematories with millions of dead Jews, Roma, Communists and gays. It led to the massacre of WWII, the Nazi brutalities in the occupied countries like Greece, with the martyr cities that were burnt, the lives lost in the blockades by the assassins of the “Security Squads” in Kalavryta, Kokkinia, Chortiati, Kontomari, Viano, Distomo and other places.

We cannot accept [Minister of Public Order] Dendias’ police attacking strikes and demonstrations with tons of chemicals and extending a hand of cooperation to the Neo-nazi assault squads of Golden Dawn, organizing racist pogroms in the neighborhoods with stabbings of immigrants, destruction of shops and house intrusions. It’s the same police that jails demonstrators like it did in Thessaloniki, where it reached the point of torturing the antifascist demonstrators of the motorbike demonstration. We are disgusted by the vulgar attack against artists like in the case of “Chitirion” theatre and the censorship of Dendias with journalists’ lay-offs and criminalization of journalist revelations.

We can not close our eyes to the thousands of dead immigrants and refugees, women and children, being hunted by the guards of FRONTEX. We demand to stop the disgrace of the nazi-type concentration camps and the sweeping operations by the Greek police. The immigrants need legalization and the refugees need asylum, victims as they are of the imperialist wars, the dictatorships and the annihilating measures of austerity by the IMF.

Samaras rushed to proceed with the new law to deny the citizenship to the children of immigrants born in this country, with a decision by the High Court that shared the racist prejudice of New Democracy and the Golden Dawn. Thousands of children that are studying in schools are deemed illegal once they turn 18 and are asked to go back to the country of their parents where they have never been themselves!

This is why the last months an unprecedented antifascist uprising has unfolded. On the 24th of August thousands of immigrants sent their message to Dendias that they are not afraid of the police sweeping operations called “Xenios Zeus”. In the neighborhoods the racist pogroms were challenged everywhere. On the 28th of October, the teachers, the students and the antifascists showed who controls the streets sending the neo-Nazi of Golden dawn back to the sewers. “Neither in the parliament not anywhere, Nazis out of our neighborhoods” shouted thousands around Greece.

We call all workers and youth, intellectuals and artists, the immigrants’ communities, trade unions, student unions, school students, the local councils, all the committees against racism and fascism, the collectives of resistance, people’s assemblies to support the national demonstration in Athens on the 19th of January. In the city which sent the greatest message against the Nazi occupation and today sends a message of resistance to the memorandums and the Troika that Neo-Nazis are not welcome – they are racist killers!

We call for international solidarity with participation in Athens demonstration on 19th of January and antifascist action around the world outside Greek embassies.

Why no platform is still relevant, and the trouble with liberal “anti-fascism”

5 01 2013

Below is a post from Libcom – nice bit of theory for the weekend, there are also some interesting comments following the original article, they can be veiwed here.

Some on the liberal end of the anti-fascist movement have argued that “no platform” is dead and free speech the best antidote to the far-right. This argument rears its head time and time again, but it bears shooting down every time.

Today, a Robert Sharp posted a short blog on Liberal Conspiracy to argue against no platform. It is, he argues, “counter-productive” because when fascists have a platform “they expose themselves as incoherent and small-minded, and it gives the rest of us a chance to argue against them.” It’s actually a fairly standard liberal argument.

The reason that it’s more significant right now, at least in Sharp’s view, is that Hope not Hate mouthpiece Nick Lowles has argued similar in a Huffington Postpiece on free-speech:

Quote:

I think you have to look at the mindset at the person behind it. The tweets against Tom Daley were horrible, but some people’s lives are made an absolute misery every day by this abuse. We have to pay that attention. There’s been a long history in the anti-fascist movement of “no platform”, but a lot of those principles have become outdated, because of new technology, people have a platform online.

I’m not going to sign up to a Twitter debate with Griffin, that’s beyond the pale. But at the same time we need to do more to take on their ideas in the blogosphere, there are ideas are out there in swathes. Or we sit on the sidelines, condemn them, and refuse to engage, that’s when we look like the pro-censorship group.

The more controversial things they say, the more attention they get. It’s actually easier with people like Nick Griffin and David Irving. But there’s mainstream hatred of Muslims all over Twitter. We have to be in the argument, expose their ideas.

The genesis of this idea is in the Enlightenment. In essence, in the absence of censorship, all ideas have to be weighed up on their own merits and against one another. Those ideas with no basis in fact and reason are quickly shot down and people latch onto those which carry weight. Pure reason wins out, without any nasty censorship to tip the playing field.

From a militant anti-fascist standpoint, there are two problems with this argument. The first is that the aim of no platform isn’t actually to censor the ideas of the far-right but to prevent them from being put into practice. Which brings us to the second: that we are not merely talking about a “battle of ideas,” here, but the struggle against an ideology built upon violence which means to wipe out its opponents.

Taking on the first point, myself and other militant anti-fascists have explicitly argued on a number of occasions against using the state to get rid of fascism. For example, Tower Hamlets ALARM argued against banning an EDL march in their area two years ago. The reasoning, seemingly obvious, being that if the state gets a mandate to ban political groups or demonstrations, it will not limit itself to the fash.

Quote:

State intervention is a worrying turn, the State stepping in and banning EDL protests is not a sign of a left wing section of the State acting, or even an Islamic element gaining strength, it is a sign of a further move to a totalitarian State. We already have the camps in Yarlswood, thug police that get away with murder and an ever watching State gathering information on us. We don’t need to campaign for them to ban political groups. Today the EDL, tomorrow us.

Even before the march took place, this warning was proven to be remarkably prescient. Rather than ban that one march, the police banned all marches across five boroughs for the whole of September. Conveniently, alongside the EDL this caught out a Disarm DSEi protest against the world’s largest arms fair.

Militant anti-fascists have consistently argued against such bans every time they crop up. Because we believe, with good reason through long experience, that the state is not a reliable proxy for anti-fascism. That is the task of the organised working class, through direct action, something which the liberals who would “reason” with the Nazis baulk at. They baulk because for them the whole thing is an intellectual exercise, and they remain divorced from the reality of struggle against fascism.

It must be said, before moving on, that one element of that struggle is propaganda. Contrary to Lowles’ arguments, militant advocates of no platform don’t “refuse to engage” with fascist ideas but in fact do so in a way that he never would. By arguing against fascism on a class basis, on working class estates, and with the very people the far-right sees as their core recruits.

Because this is a material reality that makes taking of fascism through pure reason nigh-on impossible – class. The far-right, whether in more openly violent form or having traded boots for suits, preys upon the alienation and disenfranchisement of the white working class. We are alienated and disenfranchised because of capitalism, of course, as our communities are torn apart, our jobs go and we struggle to scrape by.

But the system itself uses racism and migration to both divide the class and distract from the real culprits behind our misery, whilst the left is nowhere to be seen. Pretty hard for reason to win out when those offering the wrong answers are the only ones offering answers. Militant anti-fascists do engage and challenge this situation, but it is an uphill struggle we face.

The other side of the coin, in terms of why anti-fascism cannot be boiled down to a battle of ideas is that fascism is an ideology rooted in violence. It is hard to reason with those kicking your head in or gunning you down as you run for your life. And of course it is the white, middle class liberal advocating freedom of speech for Nazis who is least likely to be on the receiving end of such attacks.

Bad ideas ought to be challenged, yes, and giving the state a mandate for repression is a bad idea in any case. However, this is not an argument against no platform but one in favour of it.

If this seems counter-intuitive, it is because outside of militant circles the concept of no platform has been boiled down to simply not letting Nazis air their views. To liberals, this means censorship. In practice, however, no platform is so much more – namely, direct action that prevents fascists from gaining a platform to organise.

This distinction is key. As the Workers Solidarity Movement put it:

Quote:

There is a distinct difference between the right to free speech and the right to organise. Racist comments and ideas should be challenged and opposed, but a distinction must be drawn between this and incitement to violence/active recruitment to fascist organisations. […] Attempts by fascist groups to recruit members to fascism cannot be tolerated by an anarchist organisation. If such groups are not smashed when they are small, they will inevitably grow to a size where they will feel confident enough to attack immigrants, workers’ organisations, etc.

This is what militants mean by no platform – using all physical and direct action means to prevent fascists from organising and from putting their ideas into practice. It’s not easy and it’s not pretty. But it’s not outdated either, and it willmake them think twice about attacking minorities and make it more difficult for them to recruit and organise.

Gearing Up For A New Year Against The Splitters!

1 01 2013

As reported by EDL News & Malatesta, the EDL Christmas address this year from Kev Caroll was a complete fucking joke. One of the highlights for anti fascists was when he slagged off all the other break away groups, pissing off a lot of potential supporters and splitting an already fragmented far right. The splits are very visible to see with groups of ‘Infidels’ (both North West and North East) saying they will no longer attend the EDL Manchester outing on the second of March. Some ‘Infidels’ are even suggesting they have their own demo’s the same day, but we can’t imagine they would be able to get anything near the sort of numbers they would need, It will probably turn out to be a flash mob… in a pub… ordering beer… in protest…at something.

Whilst it’s easy to laugh at these public tiffs that seem to be becoming more frequent, It does look like it’s only the leaders & organisers of the splinter groups who seem to get upset as all they want is to be their own little Hitlers. The average EDL supporters are also in an ‘Infidels’ group (or two) , and also display Casuals United images all over their facebook pages, for these people who are the remaining hardcore of travelling fascists, they will go to the biggest nationalist event of the day, and do not seem too fussy who’s name they march under, as long as they get to shout abuse and piss people off, and if they are really lucky get into a scuffle with the cops/reds/locals. For example the poster below is doing the rounds on many of the EDL & ‘Infidel’ sites. We already know that March For England (MFE) organiser Dave Smeeton is furious as he has lost all control over this event, and he has asked that EDL stay away, but if this is the biggest nationalist event happening on the 21st April we can almost guarantee it will bring out every lowlife from MFE to the National Front, and every misfit in between, and the same will go for Manchester in March.

Luckily work is already underway to meet and greet our travelling fiends, and in a place like Brighton, no matter how many fascists get bused in they will always be outnumbered by a town sick to death of the fascist scumbags targeting them. In northern towns like Manchester we usually see the EDL either equaled or  just outnumbered by counter protesters, and that is usually following a call out from UAF. There is still a lot of work to be done to get the majority of locals out, who like any normal person despise fascism, but feel it is ok to leave it for someone else to deal with, or perhaps are put off by politically motivated opponents of the EDL. Either way there’s a lot of work to do, but hey, it’s a new year!

Brighton Prepares To Play It Again

20 12 2012

As well as reacting to fascism when it rears it’s ugly head on our streets, antifascists are also keen to build links in positive ways within communities. Talks, gigs, dinners, public meetings and film showings are a handful of things that not only bring people together to raise funds, but are a vital link to people outside of the movement and a chance for activists to share ideas and experiences within a relaxed environment.

Sunday the 9th December saw Brighton Antifascists host a big screen matinee showing of Casablanca (poster below). The event turned out to be a huge success with 170 people turning out to watch the classic film set in the struggle against fascism, the venue for the event is billed as ‘the oldest continuously operating purpose built cinema in Britain’, adding to the great atmosphere. Local activists were joined by supporters and members of the general public to make the showing a huge success. The matinee started with a short speech by a member of the group about the need to continue to fight fascism in all its forms and drew attention to the threat to Brighton, when the MFE, EDL, and Casuals United again threaten to bus in their supporters to have a go at the locals on 21st April 2013.

Aside from the fact that the three fascist groups heading to Brighton all hate each other whilst sharing membership, we can now see the EDL is no longer trying and hide behind the old lie that they are  fighting Muslim extremism, or Sharia Law. The visit to Brighton is for no other purpose than to have a pop at the locals who drove the fascists from the streets last year. Ironically the far right have recently pretended to care about animal rights, women’s liberation, and in the past the EDL even had an LGBT  division. If they actually believe in this stuff why do they target Brighton? Anyone would think they are full of shit?

Needless to say Brighton Antifascists will again be working on a welcoming committee for April 21st, If the town is going to be disrupted by far right extremists we may as well tell em’ where to go!! Keep an eye out on Brighton Antifascists Blog and on here.
