Why no platform is still relevant, and the trouble with liberal “anti-fascism”

5 01 2013

Below is a post from Libcom – nice bit of theory for the weekend, there are also some interesting comments following the original article, they can be veiwed here.

Some on the liberal end of the anti-fascist movement have argued that “no platform” is dead and free speech the best antidote to the far-right. This argument rears its head time and time again, but it bears shooting down every time.

Today, a Robert Sharp posted a short blog on Liberal Conspiracy to argue against no platform. It is, he argues, “counter-productive” because when fascists have a platform “they expose themselves as incoherent and small-minded, and it gives the rest of us a chance to argue against them.” It’s actually a fairly standard liberal argument.

The reason that it’s more significant right now, at least in Sharp’s view, is that Hope not Hate mouthpiece Nick Lowles has argued similar in a Huffington Postpiece on free-speech:

Quote:

I think you have to look at the mindset at the person behind it. The tweets against Tom Daley were horrible, but some people’s lives are made an absolute misery every day by this abuse. We have to pay that attention. There’s been a long history in the anti-fascist movement of “no platform”, but a lot of those principles have become outdated, because of new technology, people have a platform online.

I’m not going to sign up to a Twitter debate with Griffin, that’s beyond the pale. But at the same time we need to do more to take on their ideas in the blogosphere, there are ideas are out there in swathes. Or we sit on the sidelines, condemn them, and refuse to engage, that’s when we look like the pro-censorship group.

The more controversial things they say, the more attention they get. It’s actually easier with people like Nick Griffin and David Irving. But there’s mainstream hatred of Muslims all over Twitter. We have to be in the argument, expose their ideas.

The genesis of this idea is in the Enlightenment. In essence, in the absence of censorship, all ideas have to be weighed up on their own merits and against one another. Those ideas with no basis in fact and reason are quickly shot down and people latch onto those which carry weight. Pure reason wins out, without any nasty censorship to tip the playing field.

From a militant anti-fascist standpoint, there are two problems with this argument. The first is that the aim of no platform isn’t actually to censor the ideas of the far-right but to prevent them from being put into practice. Which brings us to the second: that we are not merely talking about a “battle of ideas,” here, but the struggle against an ideology built upon violence which means to wipe out its opponents.

Taking on the first point, myself and other militant anti-fascists have explicitly argued on a number of occasions against using the state to get rid of fascism. For example, Tower Hamlets ALARM argued against banning an EDL march in their area two years ago. The reasoning, seemingly obvious, being that if the state gets a mandate to ban political groups or demonstrations, it will not limit itself to the fash.

Quote:

State intervention is a worrying turn, the State stepping in and banning EDL protests is not a sign of a left wing section of the State acting, or even an Islamic element gaining strength, it is a sign of a further move to a totalitarian State. We already have the camps in Yarlswood, thug police that get away with murder and an ever watching State gathering information on us. We don’t need to campaign for them to ban political groups. Today the EDL, tomorrow us.

Even before the march took place, this warning was proven to be remarkably prescient. Rather than ban that one march, the police banned all marches across five boroughs for the whole of September. Conveniently, alongside the EDL this caught out a Disarm DSEi protest against the world’s largest arms fair.

Militant anti-fascists have consistently argued against such bans every time they crop up. Because we believe, with good reason through long experience, that the state is not a reliable proxy for anti-fascism. That is the task of the organised working class, through direct action, something which the liberals who would “reason” with the Nazis baulk at. They baulk because for them the whole thing is an intellectual exercise, and they remain divorced from the reality of struggle against fascism.

It must be said, before moving on, that one element of that struggle is propaganda. Contrary to Lowles’ arguments, militant advocates of no platform don’t “refuse to engage” with fascist ideas but in fact do so in a way that he never would. By arguing against fascism on a class basis, on working class estates, and with the very people the far-right sees as their core recruits.

Because this is a material reality that makes taking of fascism through pure reason nigh-on impossible – class. The far-right, whether in more openly violent form or having traded boots for suits, preys upon the alienation and disenfranchisement of the white working class. We are alienated and disenfranchised because of capitalism, of course, as our communities are torn apart, our jobs go and we struggle to scrape by.

But the system itself uses racism and migration to both divide the class and distract from the real culprits behind our misery, whilst the left is nowhere to be seen. Pretty hard for reason to win out when those offering the wrong answers are the only ones offering answers. Militant anti-fascists do engage and challenge this situation, but it is an uphill struggle we face.

The other side of the coin, in terms of why anti-fascism cannot be boiled down to a battle of ideas is that fascism is an ideology rooted in violence. It is hard to reason with those kicking your head in or gunning you down as you run for your life. And of course it is the white, middle class liberal advocating freedom of speech for Nazis who is least likely to be on the receiving end of such attacks.

Bad ideas ought to be challenged, yes, and giving the state a mandate for repression is a bad idea in any case. However, this is not an argument against no platform but one in favour of it.

If this seems counter-intuitive, it is because outside of militant circles the concept of no platform has been boiled down to simply not letting Nazis air their views. To liberals, this means censorship. In practice, however, no platform is so much more – namely, direct action that prevents fascists from gaining a platform to organise.

This distinction is key. As the Workers Solidarity Movement put it:

Quote:

There is a distinct difference between the right to free speech and the right to organise. Racist comments and ideas should be challenged and opposed, but a distinction must be drawn between this and incitement to violence/active recruitment to fascist organisations. […] Attempts by fascist groups to recruit members to fascism cannot be tolerated by an anarchist organisation. If such groups are not smashed when they are small, they will inevitably grow to a size where they will feel confident enough to attack immigrants, workers’ organisations, etc.

This is what militants mean by no platform – using all physical and direct action means to prevent fascists from organising and from putting their ideas into practice. It’s not easy and it’s not pretty. But it’s not outdated either, and it willmake them think twice about attacking minorities and make it more difficult for them to recruit and organise.

Gearing Up For A New Year Against The Splitters!

1 01 2013

As reported by EDL News & Malatesta, the EDL Christmas address this year from Kev Caroll was a complete fucking joke. One of the highlights for anti fascists was when he slagged off all the other break away groups, pissing off a lot of potential supporters and splitting an already fragmented far right. The splits are very visible to see with groups of ‘Infidels’ (both North West and North East) saying they will no longer attend the EDL Manchester outing on the second of March. Some ‘Infidels’ are even suggesting they have their own demo’s the same day, but we can’t imagine they would be able to get anything near the sort of numbers they would need, It will probably turn out to be a flash mob… in a pub… ordering beer… in protest…at something.

Whilst it’s easy to laugh at these public tiffs that seem to be becoming more frequent, It does look like it’s only the leaders & organisers of the splinter groups who seem to get upset as all they want is to be their own little Hitlers. The average EDL supporters are also in an ‘Infidels’ group (or two) , and also display Casuals United images all over their facebook pages, for these people who are the remaining hardcore of travelling fascists, they will go to the biggest nationalist event of the day, and do not seem too fussy who’s name they march under, as long as they get to shout abuse and piss people off, and if they are really lucky get into a scuffle with the cops/reds/locals. For example the poster below is doing the rounds on many of the EDL & ‘Infidel’ sites. We already know that March For England (MFE) organiser Dave Smeeton is furious as he has lost all control over this event, and he has asked that EDL stay away, but if this is the biggest nationalist event happening on the 21st April we can almost guarantee it will bring out every lowlife from MFE to the National Front, and every misfit in between, and the same will go for Manchester in March.

Not an MFE Poster

Luckily work is already underway to meet and greet our travelling fiends, and in a place like Brighton, no matter how many fascists get bused in they will always be outnumbered by a town sick to death of the fascist scumbags targeting them. In northern towns like Manchester we usually see the EDL either equaled or  just outnumbered by counter protesters, and that is usually following a call out from UAF. There is still a lot of work to be done to get the majority of locals out, who like any normal person despise fascism, but feel it is ok to leave it for someone else to deal with, or perhaps are put off by politically motivated opponents of the EDL. Either way there’s a lot of work to do, but hey, it’s a new year!

Brighton Prepares To Play It Again

20 12 2012

As well as reacting to fascism when it rears it’s ugly head on our streets, antifascists are also keen to build links in positive ways within communities. Talks, gigs, dinners, public meetings and film showings are a handful of things that not only bring people together to raise funds, but are a vital link to people outside of the movement and a chance for activists to share ideas and experiences within a relaxed environment.

Sunday the 9th December saw Brighton Antifascists host a big screen matinee showing of Casablanca (poster below). The event turned out to be a huge success with 170 people turning out to watch the classic film set in the struggle against fascism, the venue for the event is billed as ‘the oldest continuously operating purpose built cinema in Britain’, adding to the great atmosphere. Local activists were joined by supporters and members of the general public to make the showing a huge success. The matinee started with a short speech by a member of the group about the need to continue to fight fascism in all its forms and drew attention to the threat to Brighton, when the MFE, EDL, and Casuals United again threaten to bus in their supporters to have a go at the locals on 21st April 2013.

Aside from the fact that the three fascist groups heading to Brighton all hate each other whilst sharing membership, we can now see the EDL is no longer trying and hide behind the old lie that they are  fighting Muslim extremism, or Sharia Law. The visit to Brighton is for no other purpose than to have a pop at the locals who drove the fascists from the streets last year. Ironically the far right have recently pretended to care about animal rights, women’s liberation, and in the past the EDL even had an LGBT  division. If they actually believe in this stuff why do they target Brighton? Anyone would think they are full of shit?

Needless to say Brighton Antifascists will again be working on a welcoming committee for April 21st, If the town is going to be disrupted by far right extremists we may as well tell em’ where to go!! Keep an eye out on Brighton Antifascists Blog and on here.

Thoughts On The EDL’s South West Regional Meeting

8 12 2012

Last weekend saw the EDL stage a South West Regional meet up at the Portman pub in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Reports have come in that local antifascists, having got wind of the meeting, daubed the host pub with ‘EDL Scum Go Home’.Other groups also made the area as unwelcoming as possible to the south’s most determined EDLers. Local minority communities were also warned to be on their guard for an influx of the knuckle draggers.

In the end the regional meeting consisted of 7 or 8 die hards, looking extremely jumpy. The fact that the meeting was held in the main bar area and not the function room leads locals to believe the Portman was compliant with the EDL (it appears they also opened early to accommodate it).

The only two recognisable fascists were Bournemouth organiser Jacqueline Bath, and Bristol’s Mickey Bayliss (South West co-ordinator) although we know groups were invited from across the south coast by Bayliss via the super secure facebook network. We have to wonder if they actually got to discuss anything at all as a policeman stood next to them the entire time talking into his radio.

Jaqueline Bath - Probably not a real name

Jacqueline Bath – Probably not a real name

The response to the shambles of a meeting came via Jacqueline on facebook, who automatically blamed the UAF and Antifa and told her followers that all anti fascist groups support paedo’s!?! It would be easy for us to say all fascists are paedo’s, but we like to maintain a bit of dignity by only dealing with facts, something the EDL just can’t rely on. The lies continued to flow as she tried to draw fire from the pub, saying the meeting was not held there. Either she got so wasted she didn’t remember where she was, or there are two different pubs called the Portman in Boscombe, erm… and she was at the other one? Pathetic, if they are proud of what they do why can’t they tell the truth?

As the EDL fail to get people out to demo’s, and only get a maximum of 8 to a regional meet up it’s easy to write them off as a dead movement in the south. What we are seeing however is the very racist hardcore of hangers-on organising across towns, who in fact could prove just as dangerous as the large groups of  ‘casual racists’ and disaffected working class who supported the EDL in the beginning, before the true fascist face showed through (the days of the Jewish and LGBT Divisions). The EDL used to use the excuse it was attacking extremist Islam but they seem to be dropping that pretence now. Any one who now opposes them is a ‘communist’ or a peado, or both. We have seen a smaller but committed classic fascist group emerge, as they also flirt with politics and other European far right parties to try and branch out. The EDL has declined massively but it is the leftover hardcore that we need to defeat if we are ever to do away with them. Many of the dregs in the EDL are now openly aligning themselves with, or at least sharing information, with the Infidels, English Volunteer Force, CxF, and the National Front, the latter of which seems to have had a resurgence following the decline of the EDL, but whose new members of the more openly fascist groups are still lodged within the Leagues facebook groups and many consider themselves dual members.

A number of Bournemouth EDL are also now on bail for hiding in the back of a removal van as part of a plot to attack the East London Mosque, what a nice bunch of folk they must be.

Get EDL Out Of London Nov 24th

18 11 2012
political prisoner someone imprisoned for holding, expressing, or acting in accord with particular political beliefs

The regional EDL groups are gearing up to go and do a static protest outside Wandsworth Prison next Saturday to support their dear leader who they claim is a political prisoner. Mr Yaxley-Lennon is not a political prisoner, he’s inside because he broke the law by using someone else’s passport to enter the USA illegally as well as a load of other shit like the Vangate scandal.
Here’s a repost from 3cafa

Event created by ALARM

“The E.D.L (English Defence League) is a group of pathetic racist, fascist mugs who blame everything on Muslims.

They’re doing a demonstration at Wandsworth Prisonon November 24th starting at 1pm so get there for 12.45pm and give them a proper london welcome.”

Memorial March Today!

17 11 2012

On 16th November 2009 Russian anti fascist Ivan ‘Bone Crusher’ Khutorskoy was shot dead by the cowardly bastards he opposed. In the years before his murder he had been slashed with razors, assaulted with baseball bats & screwdrivers, and stabbed, yet he continued to put himself in harms way for what he believed in, providing security for Antifa gigs and human rights activists.

Today at 1.20 Anti-fascists in London will meet at LARC  before going to the Cable Street mural In remembrance of Ivan.

There is also a benifit gig tonight with proceeds going to the Khutorskoy family:

Fascist Activity This Weekend

NF to terrorise Sunderland again Nov 17th

By 3cafa

“A FAR Right group is to stage a further demonstration over the proposed opening of a new mosque.

The Northern Patriotic Front, formed in Newcastle by ex-members of the National Front in August, is to stage what it insists will be a peaceful hour-long protest in the Millfield area of Sunderland at noon on Saturday (November 17).

Police say they expect a counter demonstration by anti-fascist groups and have warned that anyone causing trouble will be dealt with.

Saturday’s demonstration will be the fourth this year staged by Far Right groups over plans by the Pakistan Islamic Centre to open a mosque in St Mark’s Road.

The last, organised by the North-East Infidels, ended in violence and 13 arrests.

Earlier this year, Sunderland City Council has granted planning permission for the conversion of a former transport depot into a mosque.

Simon Biggs, spokesman for the Northern Patriotic Front, said he expected “30 to 40″ demonstrators and added: “We will be holding banners and placards and trying to get our message across – it will be a peaceful protest”.

Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth, of Northumbria Police, said: “The organisers have assured us they do not want any trouble and their intention is to hold a short peaceful assembly before moving on and police will act in a neutral capacity to facilitate this.

“We expect those attending to ensure they do behave peacefully and they don’t become involved in trouble.

“It’s expected there will be a counter protest and we also expect all those attending to behave peacefully and not become involved in any trouble.

“”Anyone causing problems will be dealt with”.

And on Sunday…

Boston protest is a far right event

By East Midlands Anti Fascists

This Sunday will see an anti-immigration march take place in Boston, Lincolnshire. In the past, organiser Dean Everitt has made a big fuss about avoiding being “hijacked” by the far right but we can reveal that Sunday’s static demonstration at the Herbert Ingram memorial is a solidly far right event.

Dean Everitt has shown support for the Infidels of Britain, BNP and EDL on Facebook and of the 100 odd people who have signed up on Facebook, many are far right organisers and activists. They include Lincolnshire EDL organiser, Daz Healey, partner of Tony Curtis and former EDL speaker, Tracie Bird, organiser of the recent EDL demo in Norwich, Sam Burgess, BNP activist and in charge of the New Daily Patriot far right news site, Craig Farnworth, East Anglian EDL organiser, Ivan Humble, Shane Overton (Lincoln EDL), Sonya Greenberry-Coleman (Nottingham EDL) and Andy Reynolds (East Anglian EDL). Those who maybe going include Geoff Mitchell (East Anglian EDL), Louise Walsh (Nottingham EDL), Dom Woodhead (Keighley EDL), Tony Ball (Sunderland EDL), John Morrow (EDL) and Roy Wolfshead (CxF). The list of those invited includes British Freedom Party founder, Simon Bennett, Derbyshire BNP organiser, Paul Hilliard and Derbyshire BNP candidate, Emma Roper.

Sam Burgess, organiser of EDL demo in Norwich and fond of getting off on his own reflection

Craig Farnworth, BNP activist who runs the New Daily Patriot

Lincoln EDL member, Shane Overton, gets ready to “peacefully protest”

Considering the mess the EDL and BNP are in at the moment this could be a relatively big event for them and there will doubtless be more turning up who aren’t foolish enough to announce their presence on Facebook. It is quite hard to see how they this fits in with the stated mission of the EDL to combat “Islamic extremism” but when times are hard the far right turn to whatever cause they think is populist and likely to garner support for their own flagging organisations.

Local migrant rights organisations have expressed their worry about the demonstration turning ugly and resulting in violence and harassment of migrant workers and their families in the area. Given the kind of people who are pledging to turn up and the followers they will bring with them, it does not seem unreasonable. Let’s hope the people of Boston show them the same lack of respect they have done so far.

WALTHAMSTOW 2 EDL NIL. WHAT NEXT FOR ANTI-FASCISM AFTER THE ‘RETURN TO WALTHAMSTOW’?

13 11 2012

A little late reposting this, but it contains stuff worth reading! Its taken from the anarchist journal blog While Rome Burns.

This Saturday’s attempt by the English Defence League to return to Walthamstow marked another chapter in the decline in fortunes of the organisation. Time was when they could get 3000 to a national demo. Now they only managed 60. After a previous national demo at Walthamstow where 300ish EDL were outnumbered by a couple of thousand opposition, leader ‘Tommy Robinson’ (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon to his mother) announced there would be a return to Walthamstow. A strange strategy… what made him think that re-running the whole thing two months later would change the result is mysterious.

Saturday also topped off a week of misfortune for the organisation – 53 of them all got nickedapparently on the way to do something to an East London mosque including glorious leader ‘Tommy’ who has been remanded till January. This meant that ‘Tommy’ and the leadership were unfortunately unable to attend the return to Walthamstow.
