Antifascist Bournemouth

25 08 2014

Well done to all those who came out to oppose the EDL in Bournemouth on Saturday. Here’s how BHstopEDL summed up the day:

“The mood of the town was overwhelmingly in favour of a peaceful and inclusive protest to illustrate how united our communities are in their opposition to the EDL’s narrow racism. It’s probably the broadest spectrum of political opinion, gender, age group, ethnic origin and religious belief we’re ever likely to see gathered over a single issue. Above all it confirms that the ‘Islamification of Britain’ is just the paranoid fantasy of a tiny subculture.

The EDL support on the other hand, was overwhelmingly white, male and middle aged, consisting mainly of football hooligan firms from outside the county, who predictably ended up fighting amongst themselves.”

Edinburgh says no to the SDL

23 08 2014

edin

The people of Edinburgh today rejected the racism of the Scottish Defence League – the tiny and even nastier wannabe version of their southern cousins.

The SDL decided that the best place to display their ignorant racism was in Scotland’s capital in the middle of the world’s biggest cultural festival.

However, there were over 100 anti-fascists there to oppose them compared to under 50 of the SDL and their bussed-in English supporters.

Why we must oppose the EDL in Colchester

22 08 2014

colchester

The last time the EDL had an event in Colchester was on the anniversary of the murder of Lee Rigby. They marched up to the war memorial where they found anti fascists waiting. With branded EDL flags and clothing, the far right group laid a wreath on the war memorial, ‘for’ Lee Rigby.
Lee Rigby’s family and colleagues have specifically stated they do not want groups like the EDL to use his murder to further their political aims. They say Lee Rigby would not have wanted his name to be used as an excuse to attack others. The EDL have consistently ignored this and continue to use the name and pictures of Lee Rigby as some kind of justification for their racism and prejudice.

Chronology of fascist harassment of pro-Palestine demonstrations

Israel had been struggling with its mass murdering until the arrival of super-underpants-EDL man

As many readers are no doubt aware, since the beginning of the current Gaza crisis on July 8th, the EDL and other far-right fascist groups have been popping their heads up and attacking and abusing pro-Palestine demonstrations. They have always been vastly outnumbered by demonstrators against Israeli apartheid but as this list shows, they have been active and persistent across the country and have resorted to acts of violence and harassment against individual protestors when they have been able to get away with it.

The demonstrations, marches, vigils and so forth that have taken place in connection with Gaza over the last month have been almost uniformly peaceful despite people’s understandable anger and have represented a cross-section of the community with people of all ages including lots of children. Obviously the EDL and their fascist chums count it a great victory to chant racist abuse and intimidate and attack peaceful family-friendly demonstrations including small children. Anti-fascists should not allow them to claim these victories. Ideally we should be aiming to know when they are planning these mobilisations and to see them off.

Stop the EDL in Bournemouth

13 08 2014

Oppose the racist English Defence League in Bournemouth on 23rd August!

bmth

Once again this bizarre right-wing cult threatens one of the most peaceful and diverse communities in the south. Their proposed ‘Bournemouth against the Islamification of Britain’ march is a crude provocation to a section of the population that has been here since before most of them were born. They want to come and cause disharmony within our welcoming multicultural town and we will be there to “Say NO” to their unwelcome and unwanted racism.

Report of opposition to Fascist gigs around Blackpool’s Rebellion festival

For a big punk/Oi! fan like myself the Rebellion Punk Festival that takes place in August every year in my home town is a much looked forward to event. An opportunity for me to enjoy some great bands and spend my time in the company of a few thousand punks and skinheads from all over the UK, Europe and beyond.

As an anti-fascist I’ve always been concerned by the presence of a small minority of extreme right wing boneheads who frequent the festival. Perhaps due to so little opposition to the fascists, in the last few years, the problem has got worse with White Power fringe gigs taking place at venues away from the Winter Gardens and a small increase in the amount of boneheads blatantly displaying T-shirts with Nazi bands or right wing slogans on at the festival itself and around the town. It seems to go largely unnoticed to most people and compared to the amount of T-shirts visible with left wing and Anarchist sentiments on, it almost pales into insignificance. However, this year, as in recent years, people have come under attack with both verbal abuse and physical violence by the boneheads.

Batley anti-EDL demo report

10 08 2014

Bull1muCYAAogug.jpg_large

A small but determined group of anti fascists turned up to oppose about 300 EDLers marching in Batley on Saturday 9th August.

A few of the EDL had a street stall in the market square while the rest gathered in their pub five minutes away. The Anti Fascist Network presence demonstrated at the entrance to the square until the police forced our group away as the EDL march approached.

Anti fascists held a banner as the English and Israeli flags gathered for speeches before the fash got on coaches to get drunk in Leeds.

Autonomous antifascists then caught up with those at the UAF We Are Batley event. Local Batley residents also confronted the EDL independently, though the police stopped some of them from holding a Palestinian flag.

Meanwhile, in Portsmouth, 15 EDL members turned up to shout at a demo in support of Gaza.

The EDL is not dead yet. Anti fascists everywhere need to get out and get active to confront racism on the streets. Why not come to the next event?

*Next up is opposing the EDL’s even nastier Scottish clones the SDL in Edinburgh on August 23rd and then the EDL’s return to Colchester on September 6th

*Support Leeds AFN who mobilised for Batley by coming to their benefit gig on August 16th

EDL hate-mongers

The EDL are having a national demo in Batley, West Yorkshire this Saturday and as always anti-fascists will be there to oppose their racist hate-mongering.

Batley is a small (about 10 min walk from one end to the other) working class town with a large Asian Muslim population. The pretext for the EDL’s demo is plans for a new Muslim faith school in the town.
