Victory in Cardiff!

Cardiff-anti-fascist-protest copy

It was a busy weekend for anti-fascists with people opposing the EDL in Leeds, Leeds AFN holding their own demo in Rotherham and anti-fascists joining a pro-Kobane demo in London opposing a Turkish business ball at the Savoy. However top news of the weekend was a victory in Cardiff over the ‘Welsh Alliance’.

The Welsh Alliance appear to be a new incarnation of or split from the Welsh Defence League. Their claims not to be racist are slightly undermined by the Welsh Defence League having been famously stuffed full of out-and-out fascists such as notorious Swansea Nazi Luke Pippin.

Fascists Have No Place in Portsmouth

14 10 2014
While most of the morons of the EDL were in Birmingham, the Portsmouth group abandoned their comrades to have a demo about a Muslim faith school. It didn’t exactly create good PR…
“Anti-Fascists easily outnumbered the 20 or so EDL in Portsmouth today. Even if they did have the mighty Waterlooville Defence League with them.”
Photo: Anti-Fascists easily outnumbered the 20 or so #EDL in #Portsmouth today. Even if they did have the mighty Waterlooville Defence League with them. PMSL. :D

It sounds like a lot of people just going about their business joined in telling the EDL where to go, as well as all the people who came out specially.

You can read more from the local paper.

Well done to all anti fascists out in Birmingham today!

AFN groups hooked up with Birmingham UAF, Birmingham Strong Justice4ALL, unions, community groups and many others under the ‘We Are Birmingham’ banner this Saturday 11th. People came out despite the rain to demonstrate in Victoria Square together, making clear we reject the EDL’s vile and divisive message. Everyone seemed to enjoy the live music and a chance meet new people. One topic that came up a lot was the Nobel Peace Prize awarded yesterday to Malala, a Pakistani schoolgirl and activist now living in Birmingham. Read the rest of this entry »

Nazis in Newcastle

8 10 2014

Last Saturday 4th October, anti fascists in Newcastle opposed the National Front (NF) demonstration at Grey’s Monument in the city centre. The NF are white nationalists, openly old-school fascists, into Enoch Powell and swastikas. Presumably worried about anti fascists ‘jumping the pitch’ the NF organisers turned up over half an hour early. By midday they were joined by English Defence League, Scottish Defence League and North East Infidels supporters, showing the truth behind their online claims to hate Nazis. There were about 40 of them hanging around in all. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Scum on Filth on Scum’: Report of EDL demo in Rotherham

15 09 2014

???????????????????????????????

Report on Saturday’s far-right Rotherham demo from UK Aktion blog.

Well it unsurprisingly transpired that the EDL National Demo in Rotherham yesterday was a shambles. Some sources put their numbers at 500, some at 1000+ maybe more; it is fair to say that yesterday Rotherham was a petri dish of right-wingers, crawling all over this issue like flies to shit. Without going into too much detail about the consequences of the hijacking of a public, emotional issue (as it has been addressed in the last couple days by both the Anti-Fascist Network and by ACABrighton, both posts are reblogged below) it is useful to have a quick summary of their day in town. The guest-list to this depressing party included the sordid likes of the NF, the BNP, the laughably the tiny crew of Infidels, as well as a couple jokers from Casuals United (aka. the Pie and Mash Squad). A report included in Malatesta’s blog states that the BNP “were spotted on the outskirts of town at a roundabout, such were their numbers I was unable to take a photograph. We passed the 7 of them in a split second and I hadn’t even got the cover open on my phone.” Yet, bizarre points of the day go to far-right extreme religious nutjobs, The World Church of the Creator, described here as “formed in the United States by a paedophile named Ben Klassen”, adopting “Adolf Hitler as their God!”.

Third time unlucky for the fascists – victory in Cricklewood (again!)

4 09 2014

BwjnJxECMAESim9

On Saturday 30th August the South East Alliance – a small splinter group of the EDL who have developed an unhealthy obsession with North West London – returned for the third time to Cricklewood. They were protesting about the presence in the area of what they allege to be offices of Egypt’s ex-governing party the Muslim Brotherhood.

However, being a bunch a swastika-waving, seig-heiling fascist goons, they weren’t going to be allowed to parade around and abuse people unopposed.

North West London United is a broad community mobilisation that was set up to oppose the fascists’ last visit to the area. NWLU organised at quite short notice to oppose the SEA but still managed to distribute thousands of leaflets, stick posters up all over NW London, and speak to countless locals.

Antifascist Bournemouth

25 08 2014

Well done to all those who came out to oppose the EDL in Bournemouth on Saturday. Here’s how BHstopEDL summed up the day:

“The mood of the town was overwhelmingly in favour of a peaceful and inclusive protest to illustrate how united our communities are in their opposition to the EDL’s narrow racism. It’s probably the broadest spectrum of political opinion, gender, age group, ethnic origin and religious belief we’re ever likely to see gathered over a single issue. Above all it confirms that the ‘Islamification of Britain’ is just the paranoid fantasy of a tiny subculture.

The EDL support on the other hand, was overwhelmingly white, male and middle aged, consisting mainly of football hooligan firms from outside the county, who predictably ended up fighting amongst themselves.”

Report of opposition to Fascist gigs around Blackpool’s Rebellion festival

12 08 2014

re-blogged from Blackpool Anti-Fascists

Follow on @antifascist45

For a big punk/Oi! fan like myself the Rebellion Punk Festival that takes place in August every year in my home town is a much looked forward to event. An opportunity for me to enjoy some great bands and spend my time in the company of a few thousand punks and skinheads from all over the UK, Europe and beyond.

As an anti-fascist I’ve always been concerned by the presence of a small minority of extreme right wing boneheads who frequent the festival. Perhaps due to so little opposition to the fascists, in the last few years, the problem has got worse with White Power fringe gigs taking place at venues away from the Winter Gardens and a small increase in the amount of boneheads blatantly displaying T-shirts with Nazi bands or right wing slogans on at the festival itself and around the town. It seems to go largely unnoticed to most people and compared to the amount of T-shirts visible with left wing and Anarchist sentiments on, it almost pales into insignificance. However, this year, as in recent years, people have come under attack with both verbal abuse and physical violence by the boneheads.

Batley anti-EDL demo report

10 08 2014

Bull1muCYAAogug.jpg_large

A small but determined group of anti fascists turned up to oppose about 300 EDLers marching in Batley on Saturday 9th August.

A few of the EDL had a street stall in the market square while the rest gathered in their pub five minutes away. The Anti Fascist Network presence demonstrated at the entrance to the square until the police forced our group away as the EDL march approached.

Anti fascists held a banner as the English and Israeli flags gathered for speeches before the fash got on coaches to get drunk in Leeds.

Autonomous antifascists then caught up with those at the UAF We Are Batley event. Local Batley residents also confronted the EDL independently, though the police stopped some of them from holding a Palestinian flag.

Meanwhile, in Portsmouth, 15 EDL members turned up to shout at a demo in support of Gaza.

The EDL is not dead yet. Anti fascists everywhere need to get out and get active to confront racism on the streets. Why not come to the next event?

*Next up is opposing the EDL’s even nastier Scottish clones the SDL in Edinburgh on August 23rd and then the EDL’s return to Colchester on September 6th

*Support Leeds AFN who mobilised for Batley by coming to their benefit gig on August 16th

Growing opposition to Britain First’s pathetic ‘national tour’

9 07 2014

BrsJfQECMAAsRkG.jpg_large

Britain First – the new kids on the block of right-wing racial and religious hatred – have spent the last few days on a ‘national tour’ of pub function rooms. Previous to this their main activity has been a series of controversial publicity stunts ‘invading’ mosques. With a notable lack of irony they chose to protest against Muslims supposedly imposing Islam on everyone by forcing their way into mosques around the country, intimidating elderly Muslims and forcing Bibles into their hands.

They have got a bunch of publicity and a lot of Facebook ‘likes’ from stunts involving a handful of members, but have never held a demo or been forced to show their hand on the streets in terms of how much support they actually have. So the last few days of their ‘national tour’ have been an interesting illustration of how Facebook likes relate to real world boots on the street, i.e. not at all – you might have got a lot of clicks for posting up pictures of sick puppies and Rik Mayall, but that doesn’t mean anyone’s willing to leave the house for you.
