Batley anti-EDL demo report

10 08 2014

Bull1muCYAAogug.jpg_large

A small but determined group of anti fascists turned up to oppose about 300 EDLers marching in Batley on Saturday 9th August.

A few of the EDL had a street stall in the market square while the rest gathered in their pub five minutes away. The Anti Fascist Network presence demonstrated at the entrance to the square until the police forced our group away as the EDL march approached.

Anti fascists held a banner as the English and Israeli flags gathered for speeches before the fash got on coaches to get drunk in Leeds.

Autonomous antifascists then caught up with those at the UAF We Are Batley event. Local Batley residents also confronted the EDL independently, though the police stopped some of them from holding a Palestinian flag.

Meanwhile, in Portsmouth, 15 EDL members turned up to shout at a demo in support of Gaza.

The EDL is not dead yet. Anti fascists everywhere need to get out and get active to confront racism on the streets. Why not come to the next event?

*Next up is opposing the EDL’s even nastier Scottish clones the SDL in Edinburgh on August 23rd and then the EDL’s return to Colchester on September 6th

*Support Leeds AFN who mobilised for Batley by coming to their benefit gig on August 16th

EDL hate-mongers

The EDL are having a national demo in Batley, West Yorkshire this Saturday and as always anti-fascists will be there to oppose their racist hate-mongering.

Batley is a small (about 10 min walk from one end to the other) working class town with a large Asian Muslim population. The pretext for the EDL’s demo is plans for a new Muslim faith school in the town.

Far-right loses two leaders in a week! Fascists in disarray – Anti-fascists can take credit.

29 07 2014

They’re falling like nine-pins!

This week saw BNP fuhrer Nick Griffin pushed out by his own party shortly after becoming unemployed due to losing his seat in the European Parliament. As if that were not enough, a few days later we had Britain First founder and main funder Jim Dowson quitting and pulling the plug on funding the far-right wannabe paramilitary group.

Just like when chief racist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon quit the EDL because – surprise-surprise – the organisation he founded was full of racists, long-time Christian bigot and racist Dowson’s sudden implausible discovery that Britain First was a bit racist really tells another story.

This Saturday is shaping up to be a busy day for anti-fascists with multiple separate call-outs.

Cricklewood – they shall not pass!

blog-pic-1

First up is the return of the EDL splinter group the South East Alliance to Cricklewood in North West London. They were seen off last month when they tried to march down the High Street. A united crowd of anti-fascists blocked the road and police were forced to turn their gang of racists and Hitler-fanciers around and march them back to wherever it is they come from.

Growing opposition to Britain First’s pathetic ‘national tour’

9 07 2014

BrsJfQECMAAsRkG.jpg_large

Britain First – the new kids on the block of right-wing racial and religious hatred – have spent the last few days on a ‘national tour’ of pub function rooms. Previous to this their main activity has been a series of controversial publicity stunts ‘invading’ mosques. With a notable lack of irony they chose to protest against Muslims supposedly imposing Islam on everyone by forcing their way into mosques around the country, intimidating elderly Muslims and forcing Bibles into their hands.

They have got a bunch of publicity and a lot of Facebook ‘likes’ from stunts involving a handful of members, but have never held a demo or been forced to show their hand on the streets in terms of how much support they actually have. So the last few days of their ‘national tour’ have been an interesting illustration of how Facebook likes relate to real world boots on the street, i.e. not at all – you might have got a lot of clicks for posting up pictures of sick puppies and Rik Mayall, but that doesn’t mean anyone’s willing to leave the house for you.

Berwick says ‘Nae Nazis!’

8 07 2014

berwick copy

A brief report and some pics on opposition to the fascists marching in Berwick-upon-Tweed on Saturday

The fascists were an unholy alliance of the Scottish Defence League – long-known for being a smaller and nastier franchise of the more well-known English brand – and the North East Infidels – also a split from the EDL, who left to be free to be more racist.

They joined forces to bring their unwelcome message to the streets of Berwick. But the combined might of the fash of two countries appeared to equal about 40- 50 people. They had laughably decided the excuse for this outing was the call to ‘Ban the Burka’ – why this message was to be directed at the people of Berwick in particular remains a mystery. Mainly we suspect to provide the racists with an excuse to don their favourite masks and balaclavas.

Stand up to the SDL & Infidels in Berwick this Sat 5th!

3 07 2014

berwick1

by North East Anti-Fascists

On July 5th, the Scottish Defence League and North East Infidels with their North West branch as well and other minor groups such as the EVF – the same extremist Nazi nutjobs who’ve caused Tommy Robinson to quit as EDL leader – are coming to BERWICK for yet another piss-up.

That’s the same drunken thugs who’ve previously pelted people in Sunderland with beer bottles and fireworks, while their Nazi chums in the North West Infidels have targeted the Unite trade union offices and a PCS picket line in Liverpool.

The stated objective of the fascists is to ‘Ban the Burka’ which would be funny if it wasn’t so serious, of all the things going on they focus on this irrelevance.
