EDL outnumbered in Bristol

8 01 2014

Yesterday evening’s demonstration against the EDL in Bristol seems to have gone well despite short notice.

The local Bristol EDL had called a demonstration outside a meeting that was to be discussing an application to convert the empty Jesters comedy club in Stokes Croft into an Islamic religious and cultural centre. The event was to be for members of the Assahaba Centre group proposing the development to “discuss the objectors’ concerns and provide a better insight into the Islamic faith”. Funnily enough no one objecting to the development was interested in this and the meeting was cancelled due to lack of interest from objectors. The EDL not interested in actually hearing about the Muslim faith from some actual Muslims? Who’d have thought?

Update on Anti-Fascist Events in the New Year

Bradford: come to fight fascism. Stay for the tea.

26 09 2013

come to fight fascism stay for the tea

The English Defence League have announced they plan to bring their hatred to Bradford’s streets on the 12th of October. A new group of anti-fascists has formed who are busy making plans to defend the city. Whether you are from from Bradford or coming from further afield to offer mutual aid, you are welcome to join Bradford Anti-Fascists in militant opposition to the EDL on our streets.

This is a national EDL demo and we know they see this city as the place to start the race war they so desire. They will turn out in numbers. On the 12th of October we must act together to show them that they are not wanted, not needed and not welcome in the city of Bradford.

The EDL have already scored an own goal as Bradford City’s schedule has had to be rejigged for their hate march. The police have asked Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers to change their proposed football match to the 11th of October amid fears supporters would be using the same transport as the English Defence League. The clubs have relented due to safety concerns for EDL members being surrounded by working class football supporters but fans are not happy:

PRESS RELEASE: Anti-Fascist Network statement on Saturday 7th September EDL demonstration

10 09 2013

The Metropolitan Police arrested over 280 anti-fascist activists, local community members, and passersby in East London on 7 September, as up to 700 English Defence League supporters were allowed to march over Tower Bridge and rally at Aldgate without encountering any mass opposition.

A large community demonstration was restricted to Altab Ali Park, well out of sight of the EDL’s march route and rally point. A bloc of around 600 within the demonstration, coordinated by the Anti-Fascist Network (AFN), attempted to hold a march to get within sight of the EDL’s route and present a visible opposition, which was then blocked and kettled by police. Despite police attacks the front of the AFN bloc did manage to get within sight of the EDL march, meaning the only political opposition the racists saw on the day was a direct result of the AFN mobilisation.

Sarah Smith from London Anti-Fascists said:

“The number of people who joined the Anti-Fascist Network bloc on the day shows that there is a real mood for forms of anti-fascism that go beyond static rallies where mainstream politicians and religious leaders spout liberal platitudes. The 600 people who attempted to march with AFN on Saturday shows that a moderate, ‘respectable’ anti-fascism based on deference to the state and the political status quo is no longer the only show in town.”

Anti-fascists, independent legal observers, and people who were just passing by were detained on the street for over six hours before the police announced their intention to make mass arrests. Arrestees were taken to police stations on the outer extremities of London — including Colindale, Sutton, and elsewhere — mostly under the pretext that they had committed an offence under the Public Order Act. Their alleged ‘crime’ was to march down a street the police didn’t want them to march down.

Some arrestees were held for up to 15 hours in total. Were it not for the work of arrestee support groups, many of those detained would have been thrown out of police stations in the middle of the night on the outskirts of London with little way of getting home. Most have now been released with highly restrictive bail conditions preventing them from opposing the EDL and other racist groups.

Tony Dixon from the Anti-Fascist Network said:

“These mass arrests, following a similar operation at an anti-BNP demonstration in May, show how the state is using political policing to criminalise protest and intimidate people out of taking political action. Only the tamest, most moderate forms of protest are sanctioned; anything else is met with police violence, kettling, and mass arrests.”

Val Swain of the Network for Police Monitoring (NetPol), added:

“Carrying out mass arrests on any demonstration is an excessive and draconian measure. In this case it was clearly not necessary to prevent disorder – many, if not most of the arrests were carried out after the EDL had left the area.

“In this case the police have taken 286 sets of names, addresses, fingerprints and dna. It has been a highly effective data gathering exercise. They have also imposed bail conditions preventing all of those arrested from participating in future protests – even though they have not been charged, let alone convicted of any offence. The police have had a successful operation to disrupt, deter and prevent anti-fascist protest.”

East End: Always Anti-Fascist

8 09 2013

Brilliant to see thousands turn out yesterday to tell the EDL to fuck off once again from London. They had a shit turnout, no local support and didn’t go where they wanted. Many hundreds joined the AFN in a bold attempt to block the EDL’s route, despite massive police odds – and we came pretty close. Insane policing resulted in 286 anti-fascist arrests, mostly from the AFN bloc. But we won’t let arrests deter us from physically confronting the racists. The EDL draw their power from the streets and that is where we have to confront them, despite the risks. Nothing can take away from the absolutely fantastic comrades who stood defiant and proud against the EDL.

Great solidarity shown with prisoner support at police stations across London throughout the night and from GBC / LDMG. If you were arrested or witnessed arrests or police abuse, write it down while it’s still fresh in your mind, let GBC know you’re out and how to contact you. Supporting each other is a collective responsibility especially after a mass arrest like yesterday, so think about what you can do – fundraising for legal costs and anti-fascist prisoner support is always worth doing.

Massive respect and appreciation to everyone that joined the counter-protests – it was great to stand with you. See you at the fantastic anti-fascist benefit party at ULU on the 12th of October or see you on the streets.

Come September: get ready for the 7th

1 09 2013

altab_ali_park

The EDL have announced plans to march to Altab Ali Park* for a rally on 7th September. This is clearly an arrogant and incendiary declaration even by their own (sub) standards. We call on every militant anti-fascist to join us on the streets on Saturday with the good people of Tower Hamlets in ensuring that the EDL do not set foot in the area and are effectively opposed!

As part of the build up to the Tower Hamlets demo, over 250 people attended London Anti-Fascists’ event ‘Resistance to fascism and racism in the East End’ at The Rag Factory. Thanks to all the speakers, DJs, venue and volunteers that made it a success and 210 curries served to boot! Absolutely fantastic evening and we are well prepared to give the EDL the welcome they deserve in a few days time.

Anti-Fascists will be joining the mobilisation from all over London as well as from Essex, Portsmouth, Bristol, Brighton, Nottingham and elsewhere. If you haven’t booked your train, coach, whatever… time to get on it.

*The park is named for Altab Ali, a young Bengali textile worker who was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack in 1978 and whose murder inspired a mass movement against racism, which eventually kicked the National Front out of the area.

An Invite From London

30 08 2013

Tower Hamlet residents and anti-fascists host a community gathering prior to EDL Counter-mobilisation on 7th September

Event: An evening of Resistance to Fascism and Racism in the East End
Date: Saturday 31st August, 6pm – 12am
Location: The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St (off Brick Lane), London E1 5LJ

On Saturday 31st August, the Bengali, Jewish, English, Irish and other varied communities of London’s East End will come together to celebrate and discuss working class resistance to racism and fascism, both past and present.

The event called “An evening of Resistance to Fascism and Racism in the East End” is organised by the national Anti-Fascist Network (AFN) and is taking place near Whitechapel’s famous Brick Lane. It will run from 6pm to 12 midnight at The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St (off Brick Lane), London E1 5LJ. Entry is free though donations will be welcome.

There will be distinguished speakers such as Daniel Trilling, author of “Bloody Nasty People”, a profile of the British National Party; Julie Begum, founding member of Women Unite Against Racism; and Max Levitas, a veteran from the Battle of Cable Street. Participation, ideas and argument from the audience is very much encouraged.

Natasha Weldon, a spokesperson for the AFN, said:

?This event is an important warm-up to AFN’s counter-mobilisation in Altab Ali Park to oppose the EDL from 11am on September 7th. This is our community and we will come out in force to defend it. Racism is not welcome is East London, and we will make sure that the EDL will not pass.?

So expect film, food and lively debate as reflections from previous struggles will be put forward to inform the upcoming mobilisation against the English Defence League’s march to Tower Hamlets on Saturday 7th September. All anti-racists and local community members are welcome but EDL members clearly will not be.

After the discussion, music will be provided with a DJ set by Asian Dub Foundation member Pandit G.

Since the murder of Lee Rigby, Tommy Robinson and the EDL have seen their support and media profile surge dramatically. This unprecedented coming together of various anti-racist campaigners, activists and community members demonstrates the strength of opposition the EDL will face on the 7th of September.

Stop Nazi David Irving and the EDL in the North East

22 08 2013

512077.jpg.indyscaled

Two important upcoming events in the North East – get yourself there and support local Anti-Fascists:

27th August: Holocaust denying historian and Hitler lover David Irving is planning on speaking in Newcastle. North East Anti-Fascists plan on stopping him. Meet in Newcastle city center at 6pm at  Greys Monument to join them. Flyer here.

31st August: North East EDL and North East Infidels are planning on marching in South Shields. Local anti-fascists will oppose them. More info to
follow on NE Anti-Fascists blog and Facebook. In the meantime, get busy with these sticker designs.

Statement put out by NE Anti-Fascists:

Stop the EDL! Sweep Fascism Off Our Streets
South Shields 31st August

We live in a time of political and economic crisis. Far-Right fascist groups like the EDL, BNP and National Front are trying to exploit this by shifting blame onto immigrants, but it wasn’t immigrants who caused the banking crash or who are dismantling the welfare system: it’s the rich and powerful.

Groups like the EDL do not protest against cuts and job losses, but they have physically attacked those who do: for example, recently fascists have attacked the Occupy camp and a socialist meeting in Newcastle, and picket lines and a trade union office in Liverpool.

Fascist groups like the EDL are ANTI-WORKING CLASS. All they ever do is stir up racism to divide the working class against itself so that the rich can continue to shaft us.

It wasn’t immigrants who shut down the pits or the shipyards: it was the Tories. It was Labour who sold off all the public housing stock and brought in workfare. Know your REAL enemy: it’s the boss class scum, not immigrants.

The EDL are coming to South Shields for no good reason on the 31st of August to try and spread racism and divide our communities. The only people who will gain from this are the ruling class. We say, take to the streets and stop the fascist EDL in their tracks!

Fascists and Nazis are class traitors. Stop the EDL from marching in South Shields.
