Kick off at Clapton FC

5 01 2015

If you were paying attention, you may have heard news about a fascist attack on anti-fascist fans of Clapton FC just before Christmas. We reported elements of this on our twitter feed at the time, but here’s some further info to update you and to fill in some of the background…

Clapton FC is a small football club in a very diverse area of East London, playing in the Essex Senior League. For three seasons now they have gathered an enthusiastic and dedicated following calling themselves the ‘Clapton Ultras’. This dedicated anti-racist, anti-fascist and pro-working class group of fans has resulted in Clapton seeing some of the highest turnouts for matches in their League, drawing in people pissed off with the extortionate price and soulless atmosphere of many major-league clubs. The ‘Ultras’ have also got involved with the local community, supporting the Focus E15 mothers, anti-immigration raids campaigns and collecting donations for local foodbanks.

Antifascism in the UK: Highlights of 2014

5 01 2015

reblogged from UK Aktion

January 1st 2015

This past year has been a busy one for antifascists in the UK, seeing many successful counter-mobilisations against the far-right, resulting in swathe of victories for antifascists. The year began with a bang when Hungarian fascist party Jobbik attempted to hold a meeting in London in January. Kicking off the year, literally, with direct physical confrontation, multiple tube stations were blockaded whilst militant antifascists chased them around London. Well-aimed boots drove these fascists to retreat and cower in fear in an Indian restaurant, making them think twice about meeting in London again.

EDL in Slough, Feb 2014

At the beginning of February the EDL attempted to march through the diverse town of Slough. An impressive mobilisation of several hundred antifascists and locals easily outnumbered the EDL, blocking the high street in several places, forcing the local plod to clear the street violently with baton and horse charges. The ensuing scenes recalled to some the London riots of 2011, in the level of physical confrontation with the police. Considering the chaos, antifascist arrests were minimal and two pigs were injured whilst trying to defend the fascists. This was a very successful day for antifascists as the EDL march was outnumbered and disrupted all the way along it’s route.

Anti-Islamophobia Conference Update

12 12 2014

There has been some highly suspicious goings-on at Birkbeck University, original venue for the Islamic Human Rights Commission’s conference on Institutional Islamophobia. After a small scale threat by far-right groups Casuals United and Britain First, Birkbeck College have decided not to host the event, necessitating a last minute change of venue. Officials from Birkbeck have cited their inability to organise security for the event, a claim which does not stand up to scrutiny when you consider that in the past, the University of London have hosted some very controversial events, that have led to large protests. In 2011, they hosted Ian Blair, ex-Met Police commissioner. This led to large and rowdy student protests but the talk went ahead. As recently as May this year, they hosted David Willetts, universities minister. The university somehow found enough security to host that talk, despite further rowdy protests. This time, however, it appears the threat of a dozen or so far right misfits has the entire university security apparatus, which has in the past dealt with occupations and demonstrations of several thousand people, utterly stumped.

Apparently, UoL Security can deal with this...

Apparently, UoL Security can deal with this…

...But not with this.

…But not with this.

Things took a slightly more sinister turn when IHRC staff, on a routine visit to the site, were dragged into a impromptu meeting with University Officials and, scarily, a local Council PREVENT officer, who seemed more concerned about the event’s participants and the planned anti-fascist counter protest than the actual, minimal, far-right threat. PREVENT is a counter-terrorism initiative designed to combat extremism, and has repeatedly and disproportionately targeted Muslim communities. This is extremely suspicious, considering the conference was organised in part to criticize PREVENT, and it’s parent project, CONTEST, as inherently Islamophobic. It seems likely that PREVENT had a hand in getting the conference venue pulled, and if that is true, then a conference on institutional Islamophobia has itself become the victim of institutional Islamophobia. The full text of the IHRC press release can be found here. A small note to those planning to attend the conference: it has NOT been cancelled. A new venue has been arranged and emails are being sent out confirming that. Antifascists will still be out on the day, just in case. Contact London Antifascists if you’re interested in being involved.

By Brighton Anti-Fascists

On Saturday, around 30 fascists from several groups including New Dawn (an English Golden Dawn supporters group), NOP England (the ex-pats division of a notorious Polish neo-nazi group) and a few others held a demo in front of the Greek Embassy in London, supposedly in support of jailed members of GD.

Of course, Antifascists were out in force to oppose them, with a demo called by Antifascist Action for Greece (AAfG) and UAF, alongside London Antifascists, London Black Revs, Dywizjon 161, Brighton Antifascists and other autonomous groups.

Luton, always antifascist!

23 11 2014

Brighton Antifascists report back from Luton.

Brighton Anti-fascists

Yesterday saw the EDL drag their limp corpse through Luton again, despite it being as plain as the nose on your face that everybody hates them, and nobody wants them there.

Some of the assembled antifascists give the EDL a hard time. Some of the assembled antifascists give the EDL a hard time.

Whilst the local Asian community defended their area and made it amply clear the EDL would not enter Bury Park district, the UAF, North London antifascists and the AFN (including a large contingent from Brighton) assembled and held a rally. Whilst this was on-going, several groups of autonomous antifascists slipped through the police cordon and found their way to the EDL pen, getting out a banner and giving them some abuse.

lu-blog1 Some of the militant antifascists in Luton yesterday.

Meanwhile, the EDL, who had barely managed to pull 300 people for a national demonstration in their hometown, where largely confined to the outskirts of town by the Police…

Victory as anti-fascists get Britain First’s national conference cancelled

21 11 2014

10682409_1591961057698789_572247402425688433_o

A campaign led by Berkshire Anti-Fascists has resulted in getting Britain First’s national conference cancelled in the week that they were hoping to celebrate their publicity-hungry intervention in the Rochester by-election.

Intelligence gathering by Berkshire Anti-Fascists discovered that the wannabe paramilitaries and notorious racists were due to hold their national conference (and disco!) at the The New Owlsmoor Community Centre in Sandhurst, which is owned by Bracknell Forest Council. This was the same venue they used last year.

20 11 2014

10682409_1591961057698789_572247402425688433_o

By Berkshire Anti-Fascists

Hello chums, commies, lefties, anti-fascists and other comrades! *drum roll* the venue for the putrid Britain First’s conference this Saturday is:

Yeovil Road
Owlsmoor
Sandhurst
GU47 0TD

Same as last year! With a disco and all! Call Bracknell Forest Council AND the venue run and owned by them to ask WHY they think that a publicly owned building should be rented by an outrightly racist, transphobic, homophobic, Islamaphobic (could go on forever) hate group and consequently threaten the safety of their residents.

Stop the fascists in Rochester and Sunderland: Sat 15th November

13 11 2014

10801671_10152636953774219_1802681904959541578_n

It’s another busy weekend for anti-fascists as Saturday sees dual demos in the south and the north.

Rochester

Meet: 12.30, Rochester station ME1 1HQ

Facebook event

In Rochester the BNP splinter group Britain First are back for another dose of humiliation in their increasingly bizarre election campaign.

Rochester and Strood has been a focus of national attention since the sitting Tory MP triggered a by-election by defecting to UKIP. He hopes to keep his seat while becoming Farage’s second MP.  Britain First have jumped into the ring and are running  their deputy leader in the election too, mostly in an attempt at self-publicity.
